Harvey McGlothin met May Sexton in Scott County TN when he and histhree children boarded at the same place May was boarding as shetaught in a local school. May would walk to school with and home withRuth.

Per Marie's son, Johnny, Marie didn't think too highly of May afterMay and Harvey were married. John, Marie's husband, would tease Marieby telling his children to call May Grandma or Grandma May. Mariewould say, "She ain't nothing to them." Marie and May were friends,Johnny said, but only to a point.
Observation by myself: it must have been difficult on all three ofHarvey's children when he married a woman their age, and especiallywhen May had Madge and June. 06-03-07

Harvey and May McGlothin lived on Back Valley Road in Coalfield TN forall of their married life. It was the same house Harvey and his firstwife, Maude, lived in.

June remembers when the house was remodeled. May had the houseremodeled and changed the Mansard roof and the upstairs. Originallythe house had a porch on the east and west side and possibly on thenorth side and may have been t-shaped. May had those porches takenin. In later years, the rooms that were once the porches sagged.There would have been only 3 rooms downstairs then--the living room,the bedroom that was always called the "front" bedroom and thekitchen, which was to be grandma mcglothin's bedroom as we knew it.The steps to the second floor were originally on the west side of thehouse, on the opposite side of grandma's bedroom that they whilegrandma was alive.

The kitchen became a room that spanned the width of the house. One ofit's features was built in cabinets that were flush with the wall.These were white and had small doors, upper and lower cabinets.Grandma's floor was red and white tile and she had a red metal kitchentable and chairs.

Grandma's counter tops in the kitchen were red, too. But they werekind of soft, like tile. They wrapped around one end of her kitchenand the cabinet nearest the wide opening to the dining room haddrawers that opened out towards the center of the room. It also had aflat surface that opened out. This is where grandma kept hersilverware (top drawer) and her kitchen towels.

When Grandma decided to move home from Oliver Springs, Dad (JesseKesterson) redid the kitchen and put in new cabinets. Somehow thatend cabinet, the one with the silverware, ended up upstairs. Aftergrandma died, I brought it home and was going to refinish it. Idiscovered that it was one end of a roll-top desk.

Grandma's house had a wide front porch with a swing. Jesse Kestersonsat in the swing a few years after mom (June McGlothin Kesterson) diedand said he had spent many, many evenings in that swing with Mom.

The front porch had brick steps that went to the ground, then wideconcrete "landings" that went on down the hill, and finally more stepsthat went down to the road level. There was a rock wall about six oreight feet high that lined the roadway for a bit.

The steps going to the second floor were steep and dark. A stringattached to a chain at the bare-bulb light fixture and to a hook nearthe bottom of the steps was used to turn the light on and off--thelight being at the top of the stairs.

There were double windows at each end of the open second floor.Poppaw McGlothin or someone had built four or five "file" cabinetswith doors that open instead of drawers and were held closed by smallblocks of wood that were held in place by a nail.
These sat on the second floor with their backs to the stairs andprevented one from falling down the stairs. As a child, I loved to goupstairs and look in these. They were full of littletreasures--fountain pens, stamps, paper. After grandma died, we foundfive of these. I have one of them, but it isn't in good shape and hasbeen painted white.

In an undated interview with May McGlothin, she said that "Harvey" stayed with Rachel & Cecil Carson "and all her kids", which is where he met May, who was boarding there, too.

On another occasion, May talked about the woman who ran her boarding house (may not have been the Carsons) and said that the woman opened May's mail and read it. She wanted May to marry her son and didn't want May to receive correspondence with anyone else.

Coalfield school year 1963 was in session. I was in the 8th grade and it was during history class that Aunt Ruth McGlothin Hamby called me to the front of the room and told me that Uncle Dennie McGlothin had died. Other records say it was 1964. I don't care to argue the date, but recall how hurt it was to know Uncle Dennie was no longer with us. I really didn't know what to make of it. During the summer my sister Jenny and I had gone to his house on several occasions and made banana pudding for him, from scratch, of course! I think he might have paid us a quarter each. That was a huge payment!! I remember clearly that we went to his house to make it at his request. But I also remember our mother sending us to Uncle Denny's house with the ingredients so that we could make the banana pudding for him. I think it must have been a favorite of his. Of course, he told us it was the best banana pudding he had ever eaten!!!

Uncle Dennie lived on Back Valley Road in Coalfield in a long, narrow house. wide, but not deep. At one time it was one house but apparently was walled off to become a duplex. When I was young Mr & Mrs Hobb Oaks lived in one end of the house and Uncle Dennie lived in the other end, the west end. Apparently Grandma McGlothin lived in the house at one time. Of course, she died a long time before I was born. I am not sure of this since it would have been before my memory.

Uncle Denny had three rooms. The living room was the front room of the house. The doorway to the kitchen was to the left of the living room and Uncle Dennie's bedroom was to the right off of the kitchen. A doorway in the kitchen's west wall led outside, where the toilet stood on the edge of the creek. The house was white and had a full length porch. It was on the front edge of the place where Uncle Lil and Aunt Merle lived. A driver had to pass Uncle Denny to the left, and then the Owens' road to the right going on up the hill.

Denny was a brother to Robert Harvey McGlothin (my grandfather) and a brother to Merle Owens, who lived behind Uncle Dennie on the hill.

I don't know who provided Uncle Denny's meals day by day. Did my mother? My aunt Madge? My grandma McGlothin? Aunt Ruth & Uncle Fred?

Uncle Denny's house consisted of a porch stretching from the west to the east with room for a rocking chair stretching from the south to the north.

The house was eventually torn down.

On the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I, sharing a little Oliver Springs connection to that war. This is a portrait of my grandfather, Andy Justice in his WWI uniform. He grew up in Back Valley and was a 22 year old coal miner when he was drafted. Sent to fight in France he was wounded (shot and gassed) in the Argonne Forest, considered the deadliest battle in US History. He finally came home to Morgan County in March of 1919. The story he told was that he got off the train in Clinton and had to walk the rest of the way home. His mother (Susan Ann Walls Jestes/Justice) was outside hanging wash when he came down Back Valley Road and he remembered her wading through the creek in her long skirt, so surprised and excited to greet him when she saw him coming home at last.

First District Native Dies After Lingering Illness. A resident of theFirst District of Morgan County for almost three-quarters of acentury, Robert C. Walls, passed away at his home just off Highway 62on Wednesday evening of last week. Rob, as he was known by his manyfriends, was one of thirteen children born into the family of the lateAndy and Martha Ann Walls. All thirteen of the children grew intoadulthood and only two of the thirteen preceded him in death. Hisparents came from pioneer families whose members are known for theirlongevity of life. His mother was a member of the Justice family andsome of the members of this family have exceeded the century mark intheir journeys here on this earth. Mr. Walls was married to MisssMaggie McGlothin, another member of a prominent pioneer family, morethan a half-century ago. To this union were born nine children, all ofwhom survive except one son, George, who was killed while serving withthe army during the Korean Conflictct. Mr. Walls followed the footstepsof his father who was a mine foreman for the old Coalfield CoalCompany for a number of years. After the underground mining becameunprofitable following World War II, Mr. Walls turned to strip miningand operated strip mines in the Coalfield area for a number of years.Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Maggie McGlothin Walls; threedaughters: Mrs. Alma Jones, Mrs. Kenneth Scarbrough, and Mrs. SusieWard of Coalfield; five sons: Arnold of Coalfield, Jack and William ofOliver Springs, Wilson of Nashville, and R.C. of Harriman; brothers,Raymond of Coalfield, Charles of Oliver Springs, Harlan of Virginia,and Leonard of Michigan; sisters: Mrs. Mae Thornton of Coalfield, Mrs.Inez Cooper, Mrs. Mildred Jolly, Mrs. Francis Sliger, and Mrs. AlbertStubbs of Knoxville, and Mrs. Frank May of Jacksboro. Funeral serviceswere conducted from the Middle Creek Baptist Church, where Mr. Wallsserved as a Deacon, on Saturday afternoon with Rev. Homer Hooks andRev. William Bargoil officiating. Marie McGlothin Tanner, 80, of Marville and Dunedin, FL, died Wednesday morning, April 20, at her home in Dunedin of an apparenth heart attack. She and her husband had been spending the winter in Florida for a number of years.

A native of Mrogan County in the Coalfield area, she had been living in Maryville for over 30 years. She was a member of Everett Hill Baptist Church of Maryville.

During the time that her husband, John W. Tanner, operated restaruants in various states, Mrs. Tanner assisted him by keeping the books and in other positions. Following his retirement the two bought their second home in Florida.

Mrs. Tanner enjoyed crocheting, cooking, traveling, and working in her yard.

In addition to her husband, to whom she had been married 50 years on March 26, Mrs. Tanner is survived by two sons and their wives, Bill and Sandra Tanner of Maryville and John D. and Linda tanner of Nashville; one daughte,r Jeanne Watson of Lenoir City; six grandchildren, Kristi and Kelly Tanner, Jason and Kimberly Tanner, Terri and Kenny Watson; her stepmother, May McGlothin of Norwood (Oliver Springs) three sisters, Ruth (Mrs Fred Hamby and June (Mrs. Jesse) Kesterson both of Coalfield, and Madge (Mrs Robert) Jones of Norwood; and a number of nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Saturday, April 23, at 10:00 a.m. in the chapel of Smith Mortuary in Maryville with the Rev. McMurray Roberts officiating. Burial will be in Grandview Cemetery.

The family will receive friends tonight, April 22, from 7 to 9 and on Saturday from 9 to 10 a.m. at the funeral home.

BornDec. 2, 1915, in Morgan County, she was the daughter of Robert HarveyMcGlothin and Maude Hinds McGlothin. Mrs. Hamby was a teacher whobegan her career in 1935 in a one-room school in Ruppee. It was duringthat time she met her husband, Fred Hamby, while boarding with hisaunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. Clenice Hamby. Before moving back toCoalfield she also taught at Deermont and White Oak schools. She washonored by being elected Coalfield Teacher of the Year, Morgan CountyTeacher of the Year, Upper Cumberland Teacher of the Year and one ofthe seven teachers across the state to be nominated as TennesseeTeacher of the Year during the 1971-1972 school year. Mrs. Hamby was amember of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. She was active in churchprograms, including being the first librarian of the church, Sundayschool teacher and a Bible school teeacher. Her family said her hobbiesincluded photography, reading, bird watching and traveling. She alsovisited 46 of the 50 states along with Mexico and Canada. June and May Oly Owens married Fanny HInds and their children were Damon, Joe and Johnny. Their house sat behind the current Olga Owens home. It was gloomy. Their father was dead and their mother died when Joe was 16. He lived in the house by himself and finished school.

Shack Ruffner: Somebody burned up in a house at the end of Back Valley. When it cooled, they found an axe in the chimney. The housesat about where the senior citizen's building now sits. There was a mill across the road.

Glen told about an event going on at school and Glen wanted to attend so asked Harvey for some money. Poppaw gave him the money and Glen went. He began to feel guilty because he took all the money hisfather had.

June was pianist at the Middle Creek Baptist Church and served as treasurer, clerk and Sunday School Teacher. She was also president ofthe WMU .

June and Jesse met at church. June played piano for Jesse and some other men to sing at church.

JACKSON, WILLIAM REX - age 97, a resident of Clinton, passed away Thursday, August 16, 2012, at Methodist Medical Center in Oak Ridge. Mr. Jackson was born November 27, 1914 in Coalfield. He continued to live in Coalfield until his move to Clinton in 1956. Following his Coalfield High School graduation he entered into the United States Army and served his country during WWII. He served in the 137th Armored Division and he received badges for both carbine marksmanship and sub machine gun expert marksmanship. He additionally received several medal, ribbons, decorations and citations including the American Theater Ribbon, EAME Theater Ribbon W/1 Bronze Star, and the World War II Victory Medal. He was a faithful Christian and a member of the First Baptist Church in Clinton. He was also a member of the XYZ Singers at the church. He was a bookkeeper and pay roll clerk at Consolidated Coal Company, Mahan Coal Company, and Pocahontas Coal before his employment at the Y-12 Federal Plant in Oak Ridge. He retired from Y-12 after 25 years of employment. He was an avid gardener who continued to enjoy his vegetable garden until his ill health forced him to stop. He was an extensive record keeper and he enjoyed genealogy. He was a member of the Coalfield Genealogical Society and he had a vast knowledge of the Coalfield and Morgan County History. Mr. Jackson was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Jackson; by his parents, William H. Jackson and Mary Etta McGlothin Jackson; by sisters, Mary Newcomb, Mable Brown and Alma Duncan; and by brothers, Howard and Harve Jackson. He is survived by sons, Lyndon Jackson of Clinton, Donald Jackson and wife Connie of Clinton; and by grandsons, Nicholas Clay Jackson of Wartburg, Roger Evan Jackson of Knoxville, and William Alexander Jackson of Wartburg; and by several nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends. The family will receive friends Monday, August 20, 2012, between the hours of 6:00 and 8:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Clinton. The funeral will follow at 8:00 p.m. in the church with Pastors Stan Elliott and Paul Frick officiating. Funeral services for Mrs. Dixie Lee Owens Cole, 81, of Oliver Springswere held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Sharp Funeral Home chapel. TheRev. Lloyd Napier officiated and burial was in Davis Cemetery. Mrs.Cole, whose husband, Dan, died is Marchch, was a retired school teacher,having taught in Johnson and Morgan Counties. After she was married,she moved to Indianapolis, Ind.,with her husband, but they retured toOliver Springs a few years ago when he retired. About three or fourweeks ago she and her brother, Paul Owens of Oliver Springs, went toDayton to visit their sister, Mrs. Paul Allen. While there Mrs. Colebecame ill and was sent to Good Samaritan Hospital, where she diedSunday morning. She had been in ill health before going to Dayton. Shewas a member of Middle Creek Missionary Baptist Church. Her father wasthe late Rev. J. L. Lorene Justice Adcock, 79, of Coalfield, died Monday, April 19, 1999, at her home. Mrs. Adcock had worked at the Coalfield School before her retirement.

She was born in Coalfield on April 29, 1919, the daughter of Bert and Lou Rogers Justice. She had been a lifelong resident of Coalfield.

Mrs. Adcock was a member of Kellytown Baptist Church in Oliver Springs.

She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Blaine "Toop" Adcock; three daughters, Linda Hensley and her husband Jimmy, of Harriman, JoAnn Chapman of Coalfield, and Gail Massengill and her husband Gary, of Petros; and four sons, Sammy Adcock, Danny Adcock and his wife Louise, and Dale Adcock and his wife Laureen, all of Coalfield, and Ross Adcock and his wife Shirley, of Clinton.

Mrs. Adcock is also survived by two sisters, Laura Childs of Coalfield, and Clara Belle Falagaro of New Hampshire; six grandchildren, Greg Adcock, Sammy Chapman Jr., Doug Hensley, Duane Adcock, Jason Massengill and Jessica Massengill; and by several nieces and nephews. Three brothers, Clifford Justice, Hugh Justice and Oscar Justice, and a daughter-in-law, Helen Adcock, died earlier.

The funeral will be held at 8:30 tonight, April 20, in the chapel of Sharp Funeral Home in Oliver Springs with the Rev. Tommy Hensley and the Rev. Garvan Walls officiating. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 21, at Estes Cemetery. James A. Walls, 77, of Coalfield died Thursday, Feb. 15, 1996 inJohnson Nursing Home, Harriman.
Mr. Walls was a lifelong resident of the Coalfield area and an Armyveteran of World War II. He was a member of the Middle Creek BaptistChurch and the Coalfield Senior Citizens. He was a maintenancemechanic at K-25 for 40 years before he retired in 1983. He enjoyedgardening and helping people.

Jesse's father died about 1959-1960. We owned a 1959 chevrolet thatoften wouldn't start. During the death of Jesse's father, the car wasgiving us trouble. One day James Walls drove up in his pickup truck,got out of the truck and pulled out his toolbox. He proceeded to godirectly to the car and started working on the car. When done, he gotin his truck and left. The car was in working order. This was prettytypical of James.

Died:
Arnold Hayes Walls, 98, of Coalfield, went to his heavenly home on Monday, November 26, 2012. He was Morgan County's oldest veteran and was recognized by both former State Senator Tommy Kilby and former US Congressman Lincoln Davis. On November 11, 2012, he was recognized with a plaque honoring him as the oldest WWII veteran in the county.

Arnold was the first of eleven children born to Robert C. and Maggie McGlothin Walls and therefore inherited the awesome responsibility of a role model for his siblings. His parents and siblings; Wilson (Dude), Jack D., William (Bud), Shirley, Irene, Robert Jr., Alma Jones, Susie Ward and George Walls all preceded him in death. He is survived by a sister, Louise Crowe.

Mr. Walls married his childhood sweetheart, Anna Mae Phillips and they enjoyed over 60 years together. They were one of the most caring and sharing couples in the community and in their church. No other home had any more friends and relatives feast at their table. God blessed this Christian couple with three sons; Don (Yvonne), Royce (Wanda), and Shannon (Glenda) Walls, and by three daughters; Sandra Marcom (Deceased), Brenda Jackson (Charles), Melanie Walls and a special caregiver, Angie Potts.

Following 65 years of marriage, Arnold lost his beloved wife.

He visited often and checked on his friends daily with a call. He was most generous with his time and money for those in need. He witnessed to numerous people leading many to the Lord.

Serving his country in the US Navy, he was aboard the USS McClellan when the peace treaty was signed.

He was a member of Middle Creek Baptist Church where he served in many positions including Sunday School Teacher for 50 years and as a deacon for over 60 years.

He was a vital link in the prayer chain and a valuable asset to the church visitation ministry, especially to the elderly and shut-ins. He has earned the respect of all who knew him, especially his 17 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren.

Arnold was a charter member of the Coalfield High School Rochelle Scholarship Board where he served for many years. He worked at Union Carbide before founding his own coal and trucking company from which he retired.

The family will receive friends, Wednesday, November 28, 2012, between the hours of 6:00 and 8:00 pm, at Middle Creek Baptist Church, Coalfield. The funeral will follow at 8:00 pm, with grandson, Rev. Brian Walls and great-grandsons Curtis Adkinns and Colt Jackson participating. Pastor Ronald Guthrie will officiate. Burial and graveside services with military honors will be held Thursday, November 29, 2012, at 11:00 am, at the Davis Cemetery in Coalfield. Sharp Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Louise W. Crowe, age 99 of Coalfield passed away on Thursday, July 25, 2019 at Methodist Medical Center in Oak Ridge. She was born into a very large family of eleven children and enjoyed helping raise her brothers and sisters. Their parents were the late Robert and Maggie Walls. The family was very active at Middle Creek Baptist Church where Louise became a lifelong member. She graduated from Coalfield School in 1939. She was an active member of the Coalfield Senior Citizens for over 50 years and had served as president for 25 years. She served on the Coalfield Library Board for over 25 years and was the dedicated caretaker of the Davis Cemetery in Coalfield. Louise worked for Alcoa Aluminum Company in 1943 as a craneman and also worked at Y-12 Oak Ridge in 1944 as a mechanic until WWII ended. She married Kenneth Scarbrough in 1948 until his passing in 1981. She married Abraham Crowe in 1986.

She was preceded in death by her parents; Her husbands;

Sisters, Alma, Susie, Irene, and Shirley;

Brothers, Wilson, Jack, William, Robert Jr., George, and Arnold.

She is survived by her children, Eddie Walls and Sarah, Margaret Morgan and Jerry, Stephen Scarbrough and Glenda, Joel Scarbough and Sharlyn;

Special daughter-in-law, Margaret Walls;

Born June 7, 1925, in Coalfield, he was aformer deacon and member of Mount Pisgah Baptist Church, OliverSprings. Following his graduation from Coalfield High School, heserved in the U.S. Navy during World War II. After his honorabledischarged, he worked for a short time for Union Carbide Corp. Hebegan his business interests with one coal truck co-owned with hisbrother, which blossomed into Walls & Coker Trucking and Waco Inc.,along with many additional companies and corporations. In 1951, he andpartners Verlin E. Coker and William E. "Bud" Walls founded Walls andCoker Trucking Co. Inc. This partnership later established a coalbrokerage company selling coal to TVA and brokering coal to variouscompanies in several states. In addition to the coal brokeragecompany, the partnership established three real estate companies:OSLand Inc., Diamond Hill Inc. and Cherokee Bluff Realty Inc. In apartnership with Wilson E. "Dude" Walls and Verldon E. He began his business interests with one coal truckco-owned with his brother, which blossoossomed into Walls & Coker Truckingand Waco Inc., along with many additional companies and corporations.In 1951, he and partners Verlin E. Coker and William E. "Bud" Wallsfounded Walls and Coker Trucking Co. Inc. This partnership laterestablished a coal brokerage company selling coal to TVA and brokeringcoal to various companies in several states. RUSSELL, BONNIE - of Coalfield, daughter of the late Mae Walls Thornton and Wade Thornton, passed away on December 8, 2010. She was a lifetime member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. Bonnie loved her community and the people who live there. She was employed in the Coalfield School for many years before her retirement. She was known as Miss Bonnie to the many children she worked with over the years. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Her generosity to others unsurpassed; life, to Bonnie, was never about herself. She was constantly thinking about others, even during her illness. She was a caretaker throughout her life. Widowed at a young age, she became the caretaker of both her mother and grandmotther. She was always happy with the simple life she lived. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her, and her influence will live on in the hearts of many. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Willis H. Russell, who was killed in action in World War II at the age of twenty-one; her brothers, Wade H. Thornton, Jr. and Carl Thornton; and a special nephew, Richard Thornton. She is survived by a daughter, Melba McKeethan and her husband, Tim; two granddaughters, Janene Browder and her husband, John; Heather Burnett and her husband, Brian; three great-grandchildren, Laura Browder, Andrew Sullivan and Ethan Burnett; sister, Wilma Crowder; special sister-in-law and nephews and nieces. The family wiill receive friends on Saturday, December 11, 2010 between the hours of 1:00 pm and 2:00 pm at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Coalfield. Barbara J. Walker, age 76, a resident of Coalfield, died Sunday, January 24, 2010 at St. Mary's Hospice in Knoxville.

She was born on the 3rd of January 1934, in Coalfield. She loved Morgan County and lived in Coalfield all of her life.

Mrs. Walker was a well known and respected retired teacher, in Coalfield, where she taught at the Coalfield Elementary School for thirty years. She enjoyed fond memories of her students, fellow teachers, administrators and all she was associated with as a teacher. She was always excited to learn of the achievements of a former student.

She was an active member of the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church where she attended the Grace Sunday School Class. She always enjoyed the fellowship of her church, former teachers, friends and fellow Coalfield residents.

Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, Raymond Walls and Beatrice Jackson Walls and by her husband Charles Walker.

She is survived by sons, David Walker of Columbia, SC, and Todd Walker and his wife Patti whom Mrs. Walker considered as a daughter of Coalfield, by grandchildren; Jonathan "Jay" Walker and wife Terri of Oak Ridge, Christine Walker of Coalfield, Andrew "Drew" Walker of Coalfield and Sarah Walker of Oak Ridge.

She is also survived by a brother in law, Douglas Walker and his wife, Martha of Evans, GA, a sister in law, Pat Jenkins and her husband, Jerry of Anderson, SC, a special cousin, Mary Jo Wilson of Wartburg, a niece, Maria Moody of Evans, GA, and by nephews; Alan Mynatt of Atlanta, GA, Dean Mynatt of Anderson, SC, and Jimmy Walker of SC and many very special friends.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, January 26, 2010 between the hours of 6:00 and 8:00 pm at Sharp Funeral Home.
