Marie McGlothin Tanner, 80, of Marville and Dunedin, FL, died Wednesday morning, April 20, at her home in Dunedin of an apparenth heart attack. She and her husband had been spending the winter in Florida for a number of years.
A native of Mrogan County in the Coalfield area, she had been living in Maryville for over 30 years. She was a member of Everett Hill Baptist Church of Maryville.
During the time that her husband, John W. Tanner, operated restaruants in various states, Mrs. Tanner assisted him by keeping the books and in other positions. Following his retirement the two bought their second home in Florida.
Mrs. Tanner enjoyed crocheting, cooking, traveling, and working in her yard.
In addition to her husband, to whom she had been married 50 years on March 26, Mrs. Tanner is survived by two sons and their wives, Bill and Sandra Tanner of Maryville and John D. and Linda tanner of Nashville; one daughte,r Jeanne Watson of Lenoir City; six grandchildren, Kristi and Kelly Tanner, Jason and Kimberly Tanner, Terri and Kenny Watson; her stepmother, May McGlothin of Norwood (Oliver Springs) three sisters, Ruth (Mrs Fred Hamby and June (Mrs. Jesse) Kesterson both of Coalfield, and Madge (Mrs Robert) Jones of Norwood; and a number of nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be Saturday, April 23, at 10:00 a.m. in the chapel of Smith Mortuary in Maryville with the Rev. McMurray Roberts officiating. Burial will be in Grandview Cemetery.

HAMBY, RUTH McGLOTHIN, 88, of Coalfield, died Saturday, Dec. 13, 2003,at her home with her husband, daughters and family by her side. BornDec. 2, 1915, in Morgan County, she was the daughter of Robert HarveyMcGlothin and Maude Hinds McGlothin. Mrs. Hamby was a teacher whobegan her career in 1935 in a one-room school in Ruppee. It was duringthat time she met her husband, Fred Hamby, while boarding with hisaunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. Clenice Hamby. Before moving back toCoalfield she also taught at Deermont and White Oak schools. She washonored by being elected Coalfield Teacher of the Year, Morgan CountyTeacher of the Year, Upper Cumberland Teacher of the Year and one ofthe seven teachers across the state to be nominated as TennesseeTeacher of the Year during the 1971-1972 school year. Mrs. Hamby was amember of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. She was active in churchprograms, including being the first librarian of the church, Sundayschool teacher and a Bible school teeacher. Her family said her hobbiesincluded photography, reading, bird watching and traveling. She alsovisited 46 of the 50 states along with Mexico and Canada. Herstepmother, May McGlothin; a brother, Glen McGlothin; two sisters,Marie Tanner anand June Kesterson; and a son-in-law, Bill McPeters, alsopreceded her in death. In addition to her husband of 65 years, Mrs.Hamby is survived by four daughters, Karen Teague and husband, Joe,Ann Lindsay and husband, David, and Peggy Jones, all of Coalfield, andRita Brown and husband, David, of Oceanside, Calif.; ninegrandchildren, Katrina Moore, Scott McPeters, Lee Ann Couture, JohnLindsay, Andrew Brown, Paul Brown, Pamela Klicka, Brad Jones and BethRoberts; and by 13 great-grandchildrdren. She is preceded in death by her husband James Alvin Hart and daughter Suzanne Holland and grandson Damion Hart, parents, Gordon Edgar and Grace Hinds Ruffner, siblings, Thelma and Edward Ruffner. She is survived by children Jim and Julia Hart, Knoxville, Ralph and Lyn Hart, Fairfield Glade, Don and Sherry Hart, Butler TN. Theda Ruffner Hart, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, went to be with her Heavenly Father on May 9, 2019.
She was born in Coalfield, 97 years ago.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Alvin Hart; daughter, Suzanne Holland; grandson, Damion Hart; parents, Gordon Edgar and Grace Hinds Ruffner; and siblings, Thelma and Edward Ruffner.
She is survived by her children, Jim and Julia Hart of Knoxville, Ralph and Lyn Hart of Fairfield Glade and Don and Sherry Hart of Butler, Tenn.; grandchildren, Andrea and Max Pope, Jason and Renee' Hart, Jammie and Jeff Davis, Angela and Martin Egan, Beau and Laura Hart, T. J. and Heather McDaniel, Amy and Stephen Lasseigne, David and Melanie Hart, Daniel and Amy Hart and Angela and Rick Sands and Ashley Michelle Hart; 23 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Theda worked for Dr. W. H. 'Pete' Piper in Wartburg and went on to attend ETSU and graduated with an associate degree in Dental Hygiene in 1971 and completed her career in Johnson City. She retired and moved to Knoxville where she remained until her death.
The family wants to thank the faculty at Heritage Assisted Living in Knoxville for their help over the years and making Mom's life as comfortable as possible. Her love of singing and her humor, strength of character, wisdom and faith will be missed by all who knew her.
The family will receive friends Monday, May 20, 2019 at Schubert Funeral Home in Wartburg from 2-4 p.m. The funeral service will follow at 4 p.m. Interment will follow in the Wartburg City Cemetery in Wartburg.
Instead of flowers, the family requests a donation in her name be made to Arkansas Ovarian Cancer Coalition, P. O. Box 7796, Little Rock, AR 72217 or Alzheimer's charities.
