Hello Chester, just answered one email and then I have anotherinteresting one from you. Thanks, and I would like to see what W. Bput together on Coalfield history. I also really enjoyed the clubvisit. As a military brat, my family traveleveled a lot. Both of myparents were born in Illinois, and I was born in the same E. St. Louishospital as my Mom, but my Dad reenlisted in the Air Force six monthslater. So I lived in six states, and England and France for threeyears each, beforore I graduated from my third high school. I had nosense of family history or family roots, especially on my Dad's side.So sitting in a room of folks, most of whom I think I may be relatedto, way back, is kid of fun. Finding some of this tragic familyhistory is fascinating to me as my personal history could very easilyhave added another chapter of the same stuff. But I have always beenthe eternal optomist and I will admit that I been one of the fortunatepeople in life. Most of my cllose friends would agree, and I have oftenleft them shaking their heads and chuckling. For some weird reason,bad events twist around and slide by me in odd ways. I have hadanxious moments tho, as I have duly tried and often challenged myguardiaian angel to find my limits, often on a dare and mostly for fun.My oldest, best buddy calls me the luckiest SOB that he knows and Itell him someone's got to be lucky in life, if that's my fate, I canlive with it. He says he wouldn't mind some of this luck, but hewouldn't want the scrapes I seemed to find, so I needed it more thanhim. We joke a bunch. After this recent liver transplant, I believethat I have been blessed in this life, graced with a second chance,and just want to now focus on getting my ten year old son raised pastthe mischeift I ran into after my Dad died when I was 16. Learningfrom our family history, I believe the orphaned sons from the threeimmediate Liles generations before me probably encountered the sameproblems. I intend to break the chain for my son. Or at leastforewarn him. WB had earlier alerted me to look for Abner Clint andMajor Lindsay. I think I will add Newton, another possible sibling,to this list in order to trace the original Robert Liles' 300 acres.Have you or your friend looked at the Major's military records? Theremight be some clues there. I have figured out that we are 5th cousinsand our nearest common ancestor is Robert Liles. The nearest commonancestor I share with WB is John Henry Sr. and WB links to me throughmy father as they are 2nd cousins. Which would make WB my 2nd cousinonce removed (one generation) and Jennette and I would be 3rd cousins.As such, WB and you dad would be 4th cousins, so you are his 4thcousin, once removed and a 5th cousin also to Jennette. Chester, glad you identified the Roberts guy who married Clint'sdaughter. He is distant kin to me, of course.

I don't subscribe to the Coalfield newsletter anymore, but I wouldlove to see a copy of what you write for them.

I will defer to Alexis on the Hacker heritage. I don't have anydocumentation on that.

As to Major Lindsey, I think we have already exchanged our comments onhim, and although I have to respect the family lore that says he ishalf brother to Clint, I cannot find any public records that wouldconfirm (or deny) this. Snyder also had this problem.

If only we could find Rebecca's listing in 1850 census, it might clearup the matter, as well as have a listing for Sarah who m. DavidMcCormick.

In 1860, Rebecca has in her household a Liles male named William, whois 16, while Abner C. is 14. I have not been able to figure out anymore about that William, born ca 1844. As you recall, she wascharged with having a bastard child born on 23rd day of February 1843in Roane Co., so that is probably the William. No further record ofhim.

Although his name COULD have been William Lindsey, or even MajorWilliam Lindsey, the age is not close enough to fit. The 1880 censusindicates "Mager Liles" was 48, making him born ca 1832. I hopesomebody will undertake the project of looking up his records again,but I am pretty sure others have tried in the past.

As to the photograph "not being worth anything" if copied I throw upmy hands. All the sensible, or even smart alec type of comments thatoccur to me seem useless. However, if a photo was made at some point,there may be other copies floating around that will eventually show u

Do you know who the father was of Abner Clint Liles, who served in theCivil War? He's on the 1860 census with a female head of family thatlooks like it might be Rebecca (but very unclear). Other children wereWilliam, age 16, and Rebecca F., age 12. All living next to HenryLiles (Robert Sr.'s grandson). I've looked at all of the earliercensuses and at the 1890 veterans' list, but I cannot find out who hisfather was. He's buried in the Elverton Cemetery

Jesse Hacker was married twice and died an untimely death in 1883 whenon the Fourth of July he was gambling on the train headed for Winter'sGap and got into a fight with the Liles brothers, guns and knives.There was a huge court case with everyone in the county getting intoit. Papers in old Roane County Courthouse. He was at that timemarried to Mary Frances Silvey, who later married Elisha Rose. Sheand Jesse had three kids: Fred, Edgar, and Cora.

I have a document from 1848where William is accused of cohabitating without marriage and he endedup paying a fine of $25, but he shows up being married about the timeof the suit settlement. He died without issue, but he shows up in alater census with a young male, also William, who is the oldest son ofJohn, who died in 1861. He is referred to as ?Old Uncle Bill.? Thomasbought some land with his two sons that was later sold to a miningcompany and there is a bunch of documentation relating to the purchasearrangements and disposition of John?s share to his children.

Joseph LIles, aged 45, was enrolled on the 10th February 1862 in Company H B for the Third Reg. of Tennessee Vol., commanded by Capt. James G. Roberts, and was honorably dischared at Nashville TN on the 23rd of February 1865. Personal description--age 35, height five feet five inches, fair complexion, red hair, blue eyes. While on duty at Powder Springs Cross Roads, GA, about July first, 1864, he recieved a wound in the neck by a rifle ball while being engaged in conflict with the enemy. Was treated in field hospital. Since leaving service, he has resided in the 16 civil District of Roane County, TN, and has been a farmer. Is partially disabled. Webster Post Office, Roane Co. TN.

Well Hello, Chester,
I've waited for some time to hear from someone about Clint Lyles.What I know about Major Lindsay Lyles is this: He served in the CivilWar, Union Infantry 5th Reg, Pvt. Major was his name, not his rank.He had 8 children. Major was said to be a son of Rebecca Liles. Hewas born 8/23/1836. He was supposed to be the half brother of ClintLyles. I have no proof of this, however, so however you can, PLEASEHELP! Major had a son, James A. Lyles (grandpa), who in turn had ason named Eugugene (dad). You may remember my uncle Vane, who was awhiz with lawn mowers. I live in Florida right now, but will berelocating in Tn. in a couple of months. I have heard of Billl Lyles,but never gotten the chance to meet him. I have heard he probablyknows more than anyone else. Have some pics of theLyles/Solomon/Davis sides. If I can help, please let me know.Someone in the family has heirlooms and picturess thathe won't letanyone in the family see them. Kathy: I can send you a scan of the family tree in a Bible owned bymy grandmother (granddaughter of Clint). She wrote Clint and Majorwere 1/2 brothers. Other than that, I?ve never seen anything else onpaper to back it up. Apparently she didn't know the given name ofClint and Major's mother, or anything earlier. But there is plenty ofdocumentation to prove Clint is Rebecca's son. Yes, I knew both Gene& Vane Lyles. I sold a car to Gene once, and usually I had to callVane about every other year to fix something. I always heard ClintLiles was a "man about town" and from records, he had at least threesons, which were unaccounted for. They may have died as children.Clint also had an illegitimate son who WAS accounted for and went byJackson. As for Major Lindsay, I?ve never heard anything negativeabout him. A.C. and Major had a sister (or half sister?), Rebecca F.Liles, who took after her mother. Rebecca F. married Sterling Ward.My great aunt, who's in her mid-90, says Rebecca F dropped off herson, Horace Ward, at her brother Clint's one weekend and neverreturned. People thought Horace was Clint's son, but he was actuallya nephew. You may aleady know that Horace Ward married his own firstcousin, Flora Lyles, daughter of M. L.

Another thing, Major's second wife, Elizabeth Allen was agranddaughter of Joseph Hicks. Elizabeth Allen was the daughter ofPolly Hicks and James W. Allen. Polly Hicks is Joseph's daughter.Polly's father, James W. Allen, died at the Andersonvillle Prison in GAduring the C.W. He was my gg grandfather. Elizabeth Allen's sister,Mary Founty Allen, married Joseph Miller Jones, who was my ggrandfather. I have several photos of Miller and Mary Jones. You cansee the Indian features in Mary F. Allen Jones and her brother, GeorgeAllen. There is a fellow here in Coalfield (I was told) who says hehas a photo of Joseph Hicks and won't let anyone see it. I don'treally believe that tale. BTW, I bet I know who is hoarding all thephotos you're talking about, and it's not the same person I mentionedwith the Hicks photo. Most of the time, stuff ends up in the hands ofpeople like that.

When you get back to TN, if you visit some of the courthouses andlibraries, let me warn you-- the technology is sometimes awful. Mostof the librarians are friendly and try to help, but they're limited.There might be plenty of material available, but maybe their Xeroxmachine will be broken. They may have a scanner hooked to an onlinecomputer that you could email copies to yourself or print from thecomputer printer, and they won't know how to do it. If you ask to doit yourself, they might act like you're trying to set them up or pulla fast one on them. They may have a filing cabinet full of microfilm,and the microfilm reader itself is broken, or the printer on themicrofilm reader is broken. If the microfilm reader and printer arein operating order, don't be surprised to hear, "Well, I don't knowhow to do it myself, and you're not authorized, so you'll have to comeback some day when so and so is on duty." They have a tendency inthese rural counties sometimes to hire people working for nothing orhave been around so long they don't care. If there is a rechargeable,battery-operated scanner/copier on the market, it would be a wiseinvestment. I came across the1880 Morgan County Census, where Sarah McCormick and kids have RebeccaLiles MOTHER in the household. And since there is a marriage forSarah Liles for David McCormack in 1852, I think this might be thefamily below.

Anyway, it is one more big knot in the hairball of old Roane Co.families. Robbie Roberts is of my line, and he had two siblings whomar HESTERS -- children of Abner Hester and Mary Brashears. TheHOWARD family is tied to the SILVEYS. I don't know who Newton Lilesis, but he's in the big middle of it all.

SOLDIER'S CAMPFIRE MEETINGS ABOUT 1920
Mrs. Nora Courtney sent in this picture of an "Old Soldier's Camp FireMeeting" at Jonesville about 1920. She had received the picture fromMrs. Oscar (Rhoda) Tunnell whose father was Jim "Trigger" England isin the group picture. Unfortunately, only a few in the picture can beidentifie

Willie "Trut" Jones who has lived all is life next door to theJonesville Church said, "The Old Soldier's Camp Fire Meetings wereheld for many years at the Jonesville Church on the 4th Saturday inSeptember. The front entrance to the church was i in the opposite endfrom today's entrance. The L & N Railway passenger train would bringin as many as 150 old soldiers from Harriman and points west." Localveterans, and veterans from Oliver Springs, Robertsville, etc. helpedto swell the crowd. Around 1920, the group was composed of veteransof the Civil War, Spanish-American War, and World War I.

Cooked Bacon Over Camp Fire
WWI Veteran, Elmer Butler, remembers Andy Kimbrough, who was a blackman and a Spanish-American War veteran, would always have a big campfire going between two logs, and an ample supply of fat bacon. Eachold soldier would secure a piece of bacon on the sharp end of a caneor stick, and broil the bacon over the fire just like he did when inthe service. Some of the old soldiers fudged a bit and producedcheese, crackers, cookies, and assorted goodies from their pockets.

CLINT LILES (Civil War) is shown in the picture ready to strike up atune on his little drum. Julian Barger is poised with his drumstickto pick up the bass. Some say that Julian played louder and steppedhigher when marching if he had visited his well stocked wine cellarbefore he started the Camp Fire meeting.

Striking Up the Band
For the most part, these Camp Fire Meetings provided great fellowshipand good will for the entire community. Lyd Coker was always presentto keep an eye on the "doings" and she was usually included in thegroup picture.

John E. Wright who knows about the "Wrights" said, "When fellowshipwas at its highest, Thomas C. Wright, or his brother, Captain Jack,would invariably insist that Julian Barger, CLINT LILES, and the restof the band strike up "Dixie," and thereby bring the otherwiseharmonious meeting to the verge of renewed hostilities."

Order would be quickly restored when Julian Barger would strike up amarch, and lead a march down towards Poplar Creek, and then circleback to the Church with every soldier in the parade trying his best tokeep in step............................

"After the Civil War ended, as the soldiers came back home to settledown, there were two or three families by the name of Lyles thatsettled in the Coalfield area. One such soldier who married was CLINTLILES. He was a drummer boy during the war. All soldiers, whetherthey fought for the North or the South, received a pension. Some ofthem took a few years to get their checks started. My father told mewhen he was a boy he earned 35 cents a day to dig sweet potatoes.
Uncle Clint would sit sometimes and tell stories of what happenedduring the war. His pension was $12.00 a month. This was considereda large income during the Reconstruction Days after the war when wageswas 10 cents a day working on the railroad."

"Old Uncle Bill" was considered a very overbearing man. He wassheriff or Roane County for several years. The story is told of himthat while he was sheriff he did not like Negro people. There was atrain going across the river near Harriman. T There were 7 black mentraveling on the train as hobos. His pistol held only six bullets.He wondered if he could shoot them all or not. So he started with theone fartherest away and come on down the line till he had emptied hisgun. Each time he fired, a black man fell into the river. He emptiedhis gun and reloaded. Before the last man on the train got across,Old Uncle Bill shot him and he fell into the river.
Another time, there was an outlaw that was hoboing the train throughElverton, a place between Oliver Springs and Harriman, Tennessee. OldUncle Bill received a telegram from the Federal Law to be on the lookout for him on this certain train. ThThey warned him he was heavilyarmed and very dangerous. Old Uncle Bill took safety measures - heput on his bullet-proof breastplate late that afternoon when he heardthe train coming. He stopped to check the train, and sure enough, theoutlaw was on that train. When he saw the outlaw, he was getting off.The minute he set foot on the ground, he saw Uncle Bill and emptiedhis gun at him. He had hit Uncle Bill three times - each one in thechest. On the last shot that the outlaw fired, Uncle Bill beganshooting at the outlaw. Uncle Bill saw the outlaw trying to reloadhis gun, but couldn't get the empty shells out of his gun. Uncle Billcaptured him. The shot that Uncle Bill had shot at the outlaw had hithis gun and lodged in the main spring of his pistol and put it out ofcommission. The three hits which had hit Uncle Bill in the chest onlyhit his breastplate and put a dent in it.
Uncle Bill was a large land owner. He had a large farm on the HenValley Road leaving Oliver Springs going toward Harriman. He was aprofessional gambler. He won anyway he could - whether honest ordishonest. Life was cheap to him.
Once he and a black man with two other white men were on the ridgebehind the old brickyard gambling. They had been there for 2 days.On Saturday evening, Uncle Bill's brother Thomas came up to him andtold him, "I need $200.00 really bad. If I ddon't get it, I will losemy home by Monday. They are going to foreclose on my home." Thomas,Bill's brother, was a different type of person. He was a Baptistpreacher. Uncle Bill told Thomas to come back the next evening and hewould see what ht he could do. So Thomas went back to see him the nextday at his home. Uncle Bill had just gotten home that morning. Hehad been on the ridge gambling for 3 days and 2 nights. Uncle Billtold his brother, "Yesterday, when you came by to see me, I had losteverything I owned - even my farm." He went on to say he and theblack man had broken the two white men. Then the black man had justabout broken him.
Nothing else was mentioned about the incident, but a few days laterthe black man was reported missing. When he was found, he was at theplace where they had been gambling with a bullet through his heart inan upright sitting position - right where he and Uncle Bill had beengambling for three days. Hi Chester, Thanks for the info. Was this incident in Morgan County?William Liles, brother of my g-grandfather Thomas (who was murdered);(also brother to Bill Lyles' - John Henry) lived in the Hen Valleypart of Oliver Springs, and was a professional gambler, according toFlo Liles, second wife of William's son Raymond, William, she said,had killed a couple of men over card games. But she seems to rememberit being on a river boat. She said Raymond retold a story aboutstarting to go into his father's travel bag once and being severelypunished and told he was never to touch this Dad's bag because it wasfor work and the family's livelihoo

William's land was his grandfather Reverend Thomas' old farm. Theoriginal house and barn burned down and William built a new houseacross the Hen Valley Road but didn't replace the barn because hedidn't consider himself to be a farmer. This property recently soldand I had visited Flo there twice. The back of this house faces thecurrent road to Harriman and is accessed from the same, as I believethe old Hen Valley Road has been abandoned across that property

I really think I need to get more into the Morgan, Andersen and KnoxCounty records to get the full picture of what the Liles clan wereinvolved in at that time Knox for the early records and later on forbetter news coverage, and the others because Oliver Springs touchesall three.........Larry Liles, your cousin

Hello Alexis, I would like to introduce myself. My name is LarryLiles (actually Lawrence Eugene Liles) and I live just outside ofWashington, DC in Bethesda, MD. I got your Jan 05 email to ChesterSpradlin forwarded to me from him. I just memet Chester a couple ofweeks ago in Coalfield and figure we are 5th cousins going back toRebecca Liles' father Robert (b c 1759) I am very interested in thisLiles brothers' murder story involving Jesse Hacker, as they may be ofmy line back to my great grandfather Thomas (b 1859). He had a brotherWilliam who I am led to believe was a professional gambler and theyboth lived in Oliver Springs (Winters Gap).

When I started into genealogy I didn't even know the name of thisgreat grandfather, perhaps because of his legacy. My grandfather HenryFrancis (b 1879), orphaned at 12, moved to Illinois just after 1910.On my recent trip to Roane County I found Thomas' death detailed innewspaper articles where he was murdered after an evening of drinking,and an earlier account where he had murdered a man named Vann and shotat another named Potter, I think. So your note to Chester may link tothis same family group. Did this occurrence happen in Morgan,Andersen or Knox County? I found no mention of this in the RoaneHistorical Commission's papers. Do you have any web links or copieddocuments you may share? I checked your Hacker site and link onPattimac's Roane site but saw no information on Jesse's death. I doappreciate the citations you had on your Hacker site, and hope you'veaccumulated citations or documents on this incident. Excerpt from "A History of the Coalfield Area" by W.B. Lyles - - -Millard Lyles, the youngest son of John and Lucinda Lyles, was bornMay 22, 1886. He grew up at the old home place in the head of SolomonHollow. While he was a small boy, they haad a hard time feeding thefamily during the depression of 1893 and 1894. He was the only onethat got to go to school. He went to the 3rd grade. After he gotinto his teens, his father bought a farm about four miles away. Therehe built a larger home, and there he remained to help support thefamily. His father had an accident that made him blind. One of themishaps of life - when John was going up a mountain path, a limb flewback and hit him in the eye. It put it out. John was an avid hunter,trapper, and fur trader. After losing the sight of one eye, he baganbagging fur for other trappers in the area. He lost his other eyeputting barrel staves together. A metal piece flew off and hit him inthe other eye, making him totally blind.
Millard grew up with very little education. He would work forneighbors to earn spending money. On one account, he would help digsweet potatoes for Uncle Clint Liles for 35 cents a day, previouslymentioned. As he grew older he began courting the girls in theneighborhood. The story is told that he courted a girl named LizeWilliams in Petros in 1911 and 1912. She had a son by him named LoganWilliams.
On September 19, 1911, Millard met a new girl named Virgie Frye. Shewas visiting her sister who was giving birth to a child. They datedoff and on for until January 26, 1913. This was the date they gotmarried - that Saturday morning about 10:30 a.m. by Pleas Adcock, whowas Justice of the Peace at the time. Millard was 26 years old andVirgie was 19 that previous April 4.
So they started their lives together about 8 months after the sinkingof the ship, the Titanic - the ship that was built as the buildersboasted could not be sunk, but it went down on its maiden voyage fromEngland to the United States. 1509 people perished.
Millard and Virgie's first child was born in 1914, a boy. He lived 12days and died. This was very disappointing to both Millard and Virgieas they loved children. Again, in 1916, another child was born. Thiswas a girl and she was born dead. This one was the last because thecondition of Virgie's health was such that she was never again able tobear children. As the years went by, they wanted to a chld so badly,they started looking for a child they could adopt. At the Knoxvilleorphanage, the children would come up and climb and their laps andask, "Would you please take us home with you?" But somehow they feltthey were being led by the Holy Spirit and turned these children down.This took place in the fall of 1921.
Up to this time, Millard had been working in the coal mines and made agood living for the two of them. They were always going places andhaving a good time. They were a happy-go-lucky couple. Millardworked in the Coalfield Coal Company mines. They had come to thisarea not too long after the Civil War because coal was being minedhere in a big way. The name was changed again at this time - first itwas called Reo; then, in the 1840's it was changed to Ruffner'sSwitch; now it was changed to Coalfield. There was a railroad builtfrom Harriman through Coalfield into Petros. It was finished in 1905.At one time, there were eight trains a day, two of them were passengertrains.
Above the mines on the mountains, there was a place near the top, alarge level place, they called "Horse Tie." The reason it was calledthat was because during the Civil War, soldiers from both sides wouldcome through and take what they wanted fd from the farmers. The farmerswould take their animals to this level spot on the mountain and tietheir cows, mules, and horses to keep them safe. Not too far was themain top of the mountain, at a high peak, was a place called the"Signal Pole." That was where the signals were sent. They had smokesignals for different signs so the people would know what to do.
On one occasion when Millard and his brother Henry were working onLittle Brushy Mountain in the mines, they started coming down andgoing toward home. Henry was in front walking down the mountain.They heard a shot down at the foot. In about 2 or 3 seconds, a bullethit Millard in the forehead and knocked him down. Almost by the timehe got up, a large bump appeared. That was the closest he came togetting killed.
One morning when Millard went to work there at the Coalfield mines inthe fall of 1922. A man came up to Millard by the name of CharlieBagwell. All of the men knew everyone they worked with in the mines.Millard and Virgie had been to Knoxvillle looking for a baby and allknew it. Charlie Bagwell said to Millard, "Say Millard, I heard youand your wife are looking for a baby to raise." Millard said, "Yes,we have." Charlie then said, "My oldest daughter, Florie, has got ababy boy down there at my son's house in the Camp that she wants togive away. My son's name is Harve and his wife Alvana Bagwell. Tellyour wife about it." So Millard said he would. The next morning, thevery first thing, Charlie came up to Millard and said, "Well, did youtell your wife?" Millard replied, "No, I forgot to, but I will besure and tell her tonight."
That night he did tell Virgie, his wife. She told Millard that shewould go check on the baby the next day. This was in April 1922. Thenext morning she did go. It was a cool day, not too cold. She foundthe house where Harve and Alvana lived. She knocked at the door, andthey invited her in. The baby was sitting in a large cardboard box,back from the grate where they had a fire for heat. Most all of theworkers a the mines lived in the Camp in houses near the mines. Theyall had fireplaces to build fires in the winter for heat.
Virgie took the baby in her lap and she warmed herself. She statedlater, "I never have been so sorry for a child as I was for this babyboy I was holding. He was undernourished, and he was very sick." Shetold Alvana that she must be going. Alvana said, "Well, aren't yougoing to take the baby?"
Virgie said she would go home and talk it over with her husband. Whenshe got to the door, just ready to close it, she took one more lookback at the box where the baby was. He was looking at her with hishand stretched toward her. Virgie broke at this point and told Alvanato get his clothes and she would take him. Alvana got a bag, putthree diapers, a cap, and two dresses in it, and handed it to Virgie.That's all the clothes the baby had - not even a blanket.
Virgie held the baby very close under her coat. She got down to DaveBrown's house. Dave's wife was Millard's sister; they lived aboutone-half mile away. There they loaned her a quilt to put around thechild until she got home.
That evening, when Millard got home, he opened the door, came in, andsaw the boy. He wept for a long time. He told Virgie, "You get thesewing machine out. Tomorrow night when I come home, I will bringenough material so that you will be busy sseveral days making clothesfor that child." Two days later, Virgie and her sister, Sarah Brock,(who had heard of the news), came over, stayed all day, and madeclothes for the baby. Dr. H. E. Hecker was called to doctor the baby.There were three doctors that looked after the baby for the nextseveral months. After a few weeks, he started to improve. However,there was nothing that would stay on his stomach. The doctors werepuzzled as to what to do. Finally, Dr. Sinheth said to Virgie, "I amgoing to suggest, after much though, that you take a cup of rice, boilit for four hours, and give him the broth from it." So she did justthat. She was willing to try anything, and that started improving ofhis health. Virgie changed seeveral diapers for several days filledwith inflammation, which had lined his intestines. When Virgie hadleft the Harve Bagwell home with the baby, she asked Alvana what hadshe been feeding the baby, Alvana replied, "We have been giving himpinto bean soup."
So with the coming of spring, the baby's health improved greatly. AsVirgie commented later, "By giving him a bath every day, by taking alittle dirt at a time, I finally got him clean after two weeks. Butdue to the lack of proper food, nourishment, and care, the boy wouldtake sick in the least change of weather." For the next eightwinters, he had pneumonia fever. Because he was sick so much at anearly age, he got a slow start in school. But he did start school inAugust 1927 at Coalfield Elementary School. His first teacher wasLizzie Jackson, whom he liked so very much. It was a greatdisappointment for him when the teacher died in childbirth beforeschool was out in March 1928.
The school year of 1928-1929, the boy was in the first grade of schooland Thelma Whalen was the teacher. There were some boys in that roomthat were 10 and 11 years old. With another winter and pneumoniaagain, the boy still managed to pass the second grade.
I am sure you know by now, dear reader, that this baby boy was noneother than William Blount Lyles. That was the name I was going by,but by the court of the land, my name was Corum for I was not legallyadopted until February 1942 at the Wartburg Court House, there at thecounty court.

She was a homemaker and a member of Pleasant Grove BaptistChurch. She was the widow of Herbert J. Russell. She is survived bytwo sons, Kendall Russell and his wife, Lena, of Coalfield and DarrellOwens and his wife, Michele, of Oak Ridge; two daughters, Nancy Lylesof Coalfield and Shelvy Maston and her husband, Ted, of Oak Ridge;five grandchildren, Jeannette Russell, Michael Oslonian, DavidOslonian, Belinda Jackson and LaDonna Sims; five great-grandchildren;and two step-grandchildren, Sarah Rittenberry and Josh Rittenberry. Inaddition to her husband and her parents, Mrs. Russell was preceded indeath by a sister, Beatrice Wilson, and two brothers, Vane Lyles andGene Lyles. A graveside servrvice will be conducted at 1 p.m.Wednesday, Nov. 21, at Lyles-Jackson Cemetery of Coalfield with theRev. Luke Ward officiating. William Homer Summers, 69, Route 1, Oliver Springs, died at 4 a.m.Thursday Aug 14, 1969 in the Knoxville Convalescent Home of cancer.

Mr. Summer had lived for the past 18 years with his daughter, Mrs.Wanda Carroll of Louisville, Ky., befor returning to Oliver Springs inMarch. He had undergone surgery in the University of Tenn. Hospitalbefore moving to the convalescent home.

A retired farmer, he was the husband of the late Erthal Long Summers,and his favorite sport was fishing.

In addition to Mrs. Carroll, he is survived by anothre daughter, Mrs.Haxel Poyer, Paducah; a son, Jack Summers, Omaha, Neb.; grandson,Mark Poyer of Paducah; and three sisters, Mrs. Ruby Duncan, OliverSprings; Mrs. Aubrey Jones, Coalfield; and Mrs. Pearl Marlow,Louisville.

Funeral services will be Saturday from the chapel of Schubert FuneralHome in Warturg with the Rev. Herbert Lee, pastor of Liberty BaptistChurch officiating. Burial will be in the Rockwood Cemetery.

Herman Winfred Liles Sr. Born November 7, 1918. His birth certificatewas never found. His 1st. grade teacher was still alive when heapplied to retire from the coalmines and helped him to get hissocial security and miner's retirement started. Thaat and his socialsecurity records was all that was ever acquired. He died March 19,1990 and is buried in Pence cemetery, Pence, Indiana. He was the sonof William Thomas "Tom" & Susan Jane Langley Liles. He worked in thecoalmines of TN and about 1955 moved to Indiana and worked at HarrisonSteel Mills in Attica IN. After a lay off at Harrison's he workedfor farmers and for years he ran the grain elevator at Steward, IN. Hewent back to work in the coalmines at Newman IL around the sprring of1971, and retired from the coalmines in mid 1983. Daddy's entiresiblings spell their last name Liles, but we are be related to peoplewith a spelling of Lyles. Not sure how the spelling was changed. Someof the Tennessee cousins say it was when a man had a feud with some ofhis family. Out of resentment he changed the "I" to a "Y". Nobodyseems to know for sure. You need to keep in mind that these were "HillPeople". Most of them had little formal education. My father could notread nor write and his opinion of education was that he had donealright without it so why would anyone else need it. Don'tmisunderstand; he was not an ignorant person by any stretch of theimmigration. He would pick up a stick in the yard and scratch outnumbers in the dirt and he could figure out pretty much anything hewanted to. I believe he went to school part time until about thirdgrade. When he lived in TN he had moonshine still and my brother Ron,who is just five years older than meme, said he could remember goingwith dad once to his still's hiding place. He could witch water anddig roots and herbs that naturalist now find priceless. As kids wenever went to the doctor when we were sick. We were given herbs andhad to drinink some of the worst tasting things that could be boiled up,but we lived through it. Dad loved dogs, hounds mostly, & was verygood shot squirrel hunting with his old shotgun. He played thefiddle and loved country music. He loved the TV show of the sixty "TheBeverly Hillbillies". He could relate to it and had sayings in hisvocabulary similar to Jed Clampet, but compared to dad's family Jedlooked like a Wall Street banker in a designer suite.

JACKSON, LEVOY "CEDRIC" ? age 85, a resident of Coalfield, passed awaySunday July 24, 2005 at the Farragut Health Care Center. Mr. Jacksonwas born March 22, 1920 in Morgan County. He was a lifelong residentof Coalfield. Cedric served his country in the United States Armyduring WW II fighting in Central Europe and Rhineland, receivingseveral decorations and citations including two Bronze Stars. He was aretired coal miner and carpenter. A skilled builder who loved histrade so much he continued woodworking as a hobby after retirement. Inaddition, he also enjoyed his vegetable garden. He was a longtimemember of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church where he served as custodianfor several years. Mr. Jackson was preceded in death by his parents,Charlie and Hattie Jackson and Conard and Sadie Futrell and by fourbrothers, Ishmael, Harlan, Barney and Robert Jackson. Survivors:sisters, Arvina Massengill and husband, Jim of Heiskell, SusieWhitaker and husband, Thomas of Knoxville, JoAnn Gregg and husband,Willie of Mosheim, Tenn.; brother, Richard Jackson and wife, Creed ofKingston, Tenn.
