"...settled on the farm known as the Garber Farm near New Hope, Augusta Co., about 1790 or 1792. This farm ever since has been occupied by his descendents. First occupied by his son Samuel Garber, then by Samuel's son William Garber, also by William's son Charles Garber......He [Abraham] was the Founder and Elder of the Middle River Congregation. He donated and built the first house of worship of the Church of teh Brethrenin Augusta County. This was a commodious brick building erected in the year 1824, on a beautiful and convenient location onhis farm. This has been the scene of many sacred events, and other noted scenes. The cemetery near by reveals a history. Here the Annual Conference was held in 1851........On Sunday, June 5, 1864, an engagement of teh Civil War strife, known as the Piedmonth Battle, took place near by. This church house was occupied by caring for wounded soldiers of the Southern troups during the battle. Its use as a hospital was continued for near a month afterward.......This building having served its purpose, it was removed in 1884 and the present house was then built.
