    Notes:

From RootsWeb: From H.S. Stonecipher's book, The Descendants ofJohannes Steinseiffer, is the "German Background of the SteinseiferFamily", by W.A. Stonecyper, as follows:
The name Steinseifer came from the name of a small village in extremeEast Germany, located in the Erzgebirge Mountains between presentCzechoslavakia & Germany. The name of this village isSteinseifersdorff or Stone Polishers Village. These people weredirect descendants of the first people to emigrate from a general arealying north of the Black Sea in very early times. In about the year1250 A.D. they began to move into the Seigen District of Westfalenlocated in Old Saxon. These people had no last names at this earlydate. While Progressive people, all had surnames or family names foridentification purposes. These people from Steinseifersdorff gavethemselves the name of their ancestral village Steinseifer. When someof them migrarated to America in the Middle 1700's, they were requiredby British Law to anglicize their names. The word cipher even untilthe present day in England is spelled cypher, while the Americanspelling is cipher. So we can see why the spellings of ththe name havetaken on many forms. Some of the family have clung to the old Germanforms. In MD & PA, the last part of the name is SIFER copying theGerman; while in TN, some kept the first part of the German byspelling it Steincipher, a combination of the German & Americanspellings.
It seems that the first of the Steinseifers settled in the small townof Eiserfeld. The following is coppied from the daily paper ofEiserfeld, West Germany.
Eiserfeld--if ever a community in our home country is able to giveextensive evidence of past ages, a perfect example is the Collier'svillage Eiserfeld, which has been depicted in many songs, narrations &other stories written by the folklore poets Karl & Gustave Hartmann aswell as Edward Schneider--Davids (a serial of the latter is now beingpublished in our newspaper).
At Eiserfeld with its history reaching far into the past, primarilythe oldest houses can tell many a tale. Found on old documents, it isknown that this community was mentioned for the first time in 1255A.D. Eiserfeld numbered 53 houses during the period 1530-1540 &records indicate that around 1600 it counted 328 inhabitants. Today, the population has reached the figure of almost 10,000 residents.
The oldest houses are located on Bergstasse, which at the same time isthe oldest street in the community & branches of Eisernstrasse. Thesehouses belong to the Ebener & Spies families. Beautiful oldinscriptions over the street doors show that their construction wascompleted in 1626 & 1669, respectively, both houses bear the builder'sname, Paub. Notwithstanding their respectable age, these houses stillare in good repair. Moreover, their occupants will guarantee that inthe future these old structures will be kept in their present state ofrepair. These inscriptions are renewed from time to time & are clearlylegible.
The most beautiful & at the same time, oldest house is also located onBergstrasse, notably the Steinseifer house, the ancestral home of theSteinseifer clan which constituted the origin of the SteinseiferKinship. The Steinseifer family emigrants form Steinseifersdorff inthe Erzgelivege (mountain range between Germany & Bohemia), originallyestablished themselves in this house. Their Steinseifer house mayrightly be called a precious gem among all the old places of interestworth seeing in the village. The true old image of the exterior, ofthe house & the interior of the edifice as well, has been carefullymaintained & preserved. Here also the Steinseifer brothers & sisters, the present proprietors and heirs of the house, attach great value tothe preservation of the cozy atmosphere created by their forefathers.
