Per the 1900 census, Samuel is Samuel Vann rather than Brummett. He resides with his mother, Mary Vann. Mary most likely went back to her maiden name (Vann) 38 years after her husband (Wiley E. Brummett) died. However, she could have married the father of her children, listed in one family tree as George Washington Wash Vann and John Parker Vann.

Per the Brummitt family tree on Ancestry.com:

When Samuel L Brummett was born in February 1883 in Anderson County, Tennessee, his mother, Mary, was 50. He had three daughters with Sarah Unknown. He then married Stella Smith and they had nine children together. He died in 1961 in Clinton, Tennessee, at the age of 78, and was buried there.

Samuel married Stella Smith on 4 Sep 1898 in Anderson, Tennessee, United States. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
