    Notes:

Excerpt from "A History of the Coalfield Area" by W. B. Lyles - - -HisIndian name was unknown, but he was born in 1797 in western NorthCarolina. He made his way into what is known today as FentressCounty, Tennessee. There he met a family by the name of John Hicks. They were very good to him and took him in and fed him. He was nearlystarved to death. He stayed with them for several weeks, and theytook care of him.
In the John Hicks family, there was only one daughter by the name ofNancy..... As the Indian's health improved, and was back to normal,he began to notice Nancy, and she began to notice him. So theydecided to get married, when they did, Nancy did not change her nameas most girls do. The Indian changed his name to the name of JosephHicks. The reason he did this was that he did not want the governmentto know where he was - neither did he want the Indian nation to knowwhere he was.
So Joseph and Nancy left Fentress County and moved to what we knowtoday to Morgan County, Tennessee about three miles northwest ofCoalfield. At this time, Coalfield was known as or called Reo. Theyobtained a piece of ground that we know today as Solomon Hollow. Theybuilt a log house and started a family.
