Morgan,Gillis Lee Sr. age 81 of Lenoir City, went home to be with Jesus,Tuesday, September 17, 2002 after a long battle with heart trouble.Gillis was born March 5, 1921 in Coalfield, Tennessee to William(Bill) and Maggie Hacker Morgan. He was a combat veteran serving in the Army in the South Pacific in W. W. II. On December 21, 1944, he almost lost his life when a Japanese Kamikaze plane hit the LST 460 ship he was fighting on. He was a born again Christian and a former member of the Church of God in Cincinnati, Ohio. Gillis was baptized in the Ohio River in 1960, was an active member in his church where he drove the church bus and he and his wife conducted evening children's church. Gillis retired from Industrial Personnnnel in Hamilton, Ohio with 30 years service in the Teamster Union and is a member of the Teamster Retiree Club Local 100 in Cincinnati. He moved to Lenoir City after having his first heart attack in 1984. He was a member of MidTown Church of God in Roane Co. Preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, three brothers; and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Milas and Mary Ray of Oneida. Survived by his wife, Margery Ray Morgan whom he married on Easter Sunday, April 25, 1943; children, Karen Papania and husband, Joe of Cincinnati, Ohio, Gillis Morgan Jr. and wife, Joy Amos Morgan of Lenoir City, and Judy Mattus and husband,John of Vancouver, Washington; grandchildren, Joe Papania and wife,Martha of Cincinnati, Ohio, Krista Papania of Dallas, Texas and Billy Lambert of Vancouver, Washington; great grandchild, Christopher Papania of Cincinnati, Ohio; sister, Ruth Huckeby and husband, John of Vermilion, Ohio; special great niece, Mendy Cates of Rockwood; several other nieces and nephews; special Army buddy, William Grover of Marietta, Georgia. The family wishes to thank Dr. Robert Martyn of Knoxville, Dr. Ramani Reddy of Lenoir City and Covenant Home Health Care for all they did for Gillis, it is deeply appreciated. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:45 p.m. Friday with funeral services to follow at 8 p.m. in the Click Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Steve Taylor officiating. Family and friends will gather at 9:30 a.m.Saturday at Click Funeral Home and proceed to Hazel Valley Cemetery in Oneida for graveside services at 11 a.m. Click Funeral Home, Lenoir City is serving the family of Gillis Morgan Sr.

John Walls was born in 1795, and his wife's name was Anne Woods(Walls); she was born in 1799. They met and married in Virginia,later settling in Powell, Tennessee, in the late 1830's. Later they decided that they didn't want to make their home there, making their way westward, they came down to what is now Coalfield. Deacon William G. Walls
William G. Walls and his wife, Edie Ann, were received by the Sulphur Springs Church by letters on the first Saturday in March 1855. On the first Saturday of February 1867, William Walls and Andy Mcamey were "set apart" for ordination as Deacons. The ordinations were "administered on the Sabbath (next day); clothing said Deacons with official power and authority to execute and perform all duties of the office of Deacons in the Church." William G. Walls served faithfully not only as a Deacon in the Sulphur Springs Church, but he and EdieAnn were charter members of the Middle Creek Baptist Church which was constituted October 10, 1886, in which William G. served as Deacon.
William G. Walls was born January 1, 1830 probably in North Carolina.He was the son of John B. Walls (1785-1886) and Annie Wolfe Walls(1799-1875) who are buried in the Ritter Cemetery near Coalfield, TN.[Morgan County] William G. married first ________ Williams, by whom he had one son, David. He married, secondly, Edith Ann Williams(1830-1912) who was a sister to his first wife. They established theirhome on a farm on Back Valley Road about one-half mile from thepresent-day Middle Creek Baptist Church which is located on Highway#62. William G. died January 29, 1887, and Edie Ann died March 1,1912. They are buried in Davis Cemetery.
