Mr. Sampsel was born July 6, 1944 in Coalfield.He was a retired Contractor. He retired in 1992. He was a member ofCumberland Baptist Church of Knoxville, however he was very active inboth Cumberland Baptist Church and Pleasant Grove Baptist Church ofCoalfield. Funeral services will be held Monday, May 6, 2002 at 8:00p.m. at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Mack Smith and Rev.Hershel Chevallier officiating. The fafamily will receive friendsMonday, May 6, 2002 between the hours of 6:00 and 8:00 p.m. atPleasant Grove Baptist Church. Burial and graveside services will beheld Tuesday, May 7, 2002 at 11:00 a.m. at Estes Cemetery ofCoalfield. SAMPSEL, ROY LEE, 76, of Coalfield, died Sunday, Feb. 8, 1998, atMethodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. Mr. Sampsel retired in 1983after working for 34 years as an electrician with Union CarbideNuclear Division. He was born in Harlan County, Ky., on Sept. 25,1921, the son of Charles Arthur and Mary Lou Jackson Sampsell, bothnow deceased. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and served as a chief torpedoofficer in the submarine service division during World War II. Mr.Sampsel had been a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church inCoalfield for more than 50 years and was ordained a deacon at thechurch in 1954. He is survived by his wife, Eva Dean Sampsel; threesons, R.L. "Sam" Sampsel and Dick Sampsel and his wife, Dottie, all ofKnoxvillee, and Rodney Sampsel and his wife, Diane, of Humble, Texas; asister, Lahoma Ray of Harriman; a brother, Elbert Sampsell and hiswife, Betty, of Hopewell, Va.; and by six grandchildren, fourgreat-grandsons and several nieces and nephews.A brother, CharlesSampsell, died earlier.
