    Notes:

WFT Vol. 6, Pedigree 4373 indicates that Telitha died in 1854. Thismeans she would of been 19 years old when she died, and could not havebeen the mother of the children attributed to her. I feel this deathdate is an error of transcription, and that she was actually marriedin this year and died sometime after her last child was born in 1876.Jeff Waters records indicate that she died in 1877 and is buried inthe Tom Winkler Stephens Cemetery in McCreary County, KY. Provided byEd Smith July 27, 2000.

Telitha married George Washington Smith on 17 Mar 1854 in Williamsburg, Whitley, Kentucky, United States. Dear Sue,
I have likely the same Wm. Spradlin(g) in my files, b ca 1814, hemarried Elly or Ella Waters b ca 1816 on 8 May 1834. Elly may besister of Elizabeth Waters 1810-1865 who married Nelson Coffey and wasdaugh of Elijah Waters & Nancy Rue.
William was son of James Spradlin(g) b ca 1785 in Wilkes NC &Elizabeth "Betsy" Mounce, b 1786 in KY & died aft 1870. Wm & Betsymarried 12 Nov 1809. I have heard they had 10 children, but I do notknow any of their names. I have quite a bit of info back from JamesSpradlin(g) and will be glad to share if you don't have it. Also beinterested in those names of the children. I'll bet there is aconnection to my Smiths, since those families intermarried a lot.

    November 21, 1813 Wayne Co., Ky Marriages and Vital Statistics, Vol.2, marriages K-Z, 1801-1860 by Jane Baldwin Bork contains the folowingpassage;

"SPRADLIN, Jesse and Jincy "Jeany" Canterbury. Surety, Josua Phipps.Married 21 November 1813 by (Racoon) John Smith. Endorsement on Bond:"Parties of age". (Since Jesse would have been about 69 years old, this note may have been made in a facious or sarcastic manner.)

Early American Marriages, Atlantic South Regions gives the sameinformation as above, but calls her "Jenny" instead of "Jeany".

A Jesse Spradling married a Sally Stone in Floyd County, Kentucky onSep 13, 1820. From "Maryland Revolutionary Records by Harry WrightNewman with hand written annotation giving date and location ofmarriage. I don't know who this could be.

    Charity Ray 70 NC
    Jesse Spradlin 106 " pauper
    Polley McLane 30 VA
    Jackson Coffey 25 Ky labor
    John Nokes 18 " pauper
    Martha Coffey 17 Ky
    Matilda McLane 4 "

His son James wife, Elizabeth Mounce, was born about 1792. If weassume James was 21 years old when he married her on Nov 12 or 19,1809, then he would have been born in 1788. This indicates that Jeany(or Jenny?) Canterbury could not have been James mother since she didnot marry Jesse until 1813. His mother must have been ElizabethColquitt if in fact this is the correct Jesse. There are other JesseSpradlings alive at this time and I don't know anything about theirgeneaologys. One of thehese other wives of a Jesse Spradling is SallyStone who did not marry until 1820, so she could not have been themother of James. Also, Gene Starks page on the internet indicatesthat Jesse Spradling married a woman named Mary Appling, but there isno indication of where or when.

For what it's worth, Samuel D. Perry's "South Fork Country" states onpage 107
"Few families in the region had as close contact with the Cherokee asdid that
of John Mounce (Mounts). John is believed to have been a brother ofSusannah
Mabel Mounts who moved to Wayne County, Kentucky from Gararrd County, with her
husband Richard Harve Slavey, shortly after Wayne County was createdin
    1800..."

There's no source for this assertion. The story that follows isattributed to
Obie Coffey, "one of the last remaining 'shade tree hstorians' whocould bridge
Cherokee history with white. Of Cherokee descent himself, he usuallygot it
    right."

That's a very good question. Rachel Wade, sister of Joseph, marriedJohn
MOUNCE. I assume this would have been John Mounce JR. John & RachelMounce
took up residence in Wayne County. I also note that Dawson Wade wasin
Wayne in 1810 and received a 200 acre grant. I think this must havebeen
Dawson JR, as Dawson SR died in Montgomery Co KY. I also note thatboth
Dawson WADE (SR & JR) and Richard WADE SR were in Madison Countybefore 1800
This may mean that the Mounce family was also there, but I have not
    checked into it.

Richard WADE SR was married to Judith HANCOCK, and they also came toWayne
County. I have not made a connection, but believe Judith was relatedto
Benjamin Hancock, who came to Wayne from Guilford Co, NC, and to JohnD.
Hancock, whose son Major Hancock came to Wayne from Patrick Co VA.

All this also ties into my husband's ancestor Samuel Clark b. 1775,who also
now appears to have come to Wayne County from Madison County. He is
enumerated on the Madison County tax list with his father Thomas Clarkin
1796 In Wayne County in 1829 Samuel Clark married Hannah James, thewidow
of Elisha WADE, whom she had married in Madison County in 1792.Elisha WADE
was born 1773 to Richard WADE SR and Judith HANCOCK in Goochland CoVA.

I don't know about Dawson WADE SR or John MOUNCE SR, but I do knowthat
Richard WADE SR and Judith HANCOCK's brothers were stationed at Ft.Boone in
Madison County. It may be that John Mounce SR had a brother whofought and
died during the war or as a result of an Indian raid. Joseph Wade wasnot
old enough to have fought in the Revolutionary War, but he appears tobe of
the generation of those who were children of Revolutionary War vets. That
would place Peggy (and, yes, Peggy is a nickname for Margaret) Mouncein the
same generation with Dawson JR, John Mounce JR and Rachel Wade.Assuming
she was 17 when she was married in 1793, that would give an est. dobof 1776
She needed the consent of her parent/guardian to marry, which meansshe
was not yet 21 yrs of age. I don't know how old Joseph was, but I doknow
that his sister Rachel Wade Mounce had a daughter born in 1792, givingan
est. year of birth of 1772. Joseph & Peggy could have been bornanywhere in
    that time frame.

As an addendum to the below message, June Bork informs me that shebelieves
the age of majority for brides was 18; for grooms, 21. That being thecase,
Peggy Mounce would have been no older than 17 when she married JosephWade
    in 1793.
