    Dear Father
    Morgan Co. E. Tennessee
I am here a soldier in 2 Regiment East Tenn Cavalary Commanded by ColD. M. Ray from Sevierville Ten I have been in the service sinceNovember 20th, 1862 and have enjoyed excellent health all the time. Was in the battle of Stones River before Murfreesboro. The Regimentlost several men in the engagement amongst others my Capt James H.Morris he was from Knox Co Ten and was a kind man and good officer. My Co is now commanded by Capt James H. Knight I am Co blacksmith anddo a good deal of woork. I recd a letter from home recently bearingdate May 7th 1863 it contained Sad news the death of my oldestdaughter Rachael also that my wife was very unwell I could beperfectly contented here to fight for my country if things were allright at home but knowing the condition of affairs there renders mewhen I suffer myself to think of it unhappy indeed has it not cost usmany sacrafices to be loyal in E. Tenn Yet I together with my exiledfriends intend to strike for out altars and our homes until the lastarmed foe expires or until the flag of the free again floats as onceit did over our State May the time not be long when Tenn will againbe Free.
Tis impossible to tell whether the Federal Army will invade E. Tennthis summer and even if I knew it would not be prudent to write it ina letter going there knowing that letters are frequently captured andthat their contents often do harm to ouur glorious cause of Union. There has been considerable skirmishing along our lines at this placefor some days past Also some heavy fighting at _______distancefifteen miles from here and at Franklin distance about 30 miles fromhere the rebs were repulsed everytime with heavy loss
Remember me kindly to relations and friends
Write me if you have an opportunity
    don't fail
would afford me much pleasure to hear from you all.

Jimmy Hallcox came from England in the 1840's and settled in CoalHill. Fought during the Civil War. CO E 1st TN INF.

From "A History of the Coalfield Area" by W.B. Lyles:

Two great friends, Bill Wilson and Jimmy Hallcox, lived in England inthe early 1830's, and they wanted to come to America. They arrived inVirginia, later made their way to Powell, Tennessee, and stayed withBill Wilson's brother for a couple of years before thy moved west tothe Coal Hill area in Coalfield. These two teenage boys boarded withJohn Walls and worked in the mines for him. Bill Wilson fell in lovewith John Walls' daughter, Margaret. They eventually got married.Shortly t thereafter, the Civil War began. Bill and his friend, JimmyHallcox, joined the Union forces. After a few months at war, the boysreceived a furlough to visit home. They brought a friend they had metin service whose name was Hugh Lawson. Bill, his wife, Jimmy, andHugh Lawson stayed together during this furlough in a log cabin thatwas located on the property where Jimmy Wendt presently resides.Somehow, the Rebel forces discovered that the Union boys were in town. The Rebels sneaked into Coalfield, knocked the chinking out frombetween the logs of the cabin, and they shot Bill Wilson in the headwhich killed him instantly. Hugh Lawson and Jimmy Hallcox got away.Bill's wife was not harmed. After a bit, the Rebels caught HughLawson. They took Lawson up on Walden Ridge. They tortured him andburned him at the stake. While these boys (Jimmy and Bill) werefriends in service for the Union Army, they had made an agreement; ifanything happened to Bill, Jimmy would take care of Margaret. Shortlyafter his horrible incident, Jimmy returned to the area, marriedMargaret, and they had a large family. One of their children was SamHallcox, whose children were Grace Adcock, Nicola Hallcox, ChloeThornton, Clarice Shipwash, Viola Russell, and Walter Hallcox. All ofthese children raised their families in the Coalfield area exceptWalter, and he moved to Ten Mile, Tennessee. Sam Hallcox was RaymondHallcox's father, whom so many of us know.

Letter to James B. Jones after the Civil War:

    Mr. Jas. B. Jones
    Dr Sir
This is to say that your letter of inquiry after your Bro Wm S Jonesdated the 1st of July 1869 was recd in due time and handed to your broWm who took it home to read at his leasure, saying that he wouldanswer it soon, this is the reason why I didid not write as yourequested and not having the letter did not remember your address, anda few days ago I asked your bro if he had ever answered you he said hehad not but had intended from time to time to do so but had as oftenfailed, where upoon I requested him to bring your letter up & I wouldanswer it which he did yesterday, and I now proceed to give you thepoints as requested by the old man, He was glad to hear from you andthat you and most of yours in person escaped the ravages o of the lateway, You say the Rebels took the most you had & in reply your bro saysthe Yankees completely broke him up, taking and destroying everythinghe had but is glad to say that through the goodness of Providence heand wife are yet living anand thinks he will be able to live above wanttill it shall please god to take him hence to another world The oldman is quite feeble times has attacks of dizziness in his head & crampof his body so severe that he thinks he must die. The old laddy is themost active of the two though she is the oldest. The old man is livingat the same old place where he has lived for the last forty or moreyears on the Humphery's Estate. This part of Va is rapidly recoveringfrom the effect of the war and the appearance of the country ischeering (?) notwithstanding we have to lament a lost couse and thesacrifice of thousands of brave and valuable lives; crops of grain ofevery kind was good with us last year and I think if we can get rid ofCarpet bag scalawag and negro rule we will soon be the people that Vacould wonce bost of; In conclusion will say that you bro wishes to beremembered to you and yours in love as and hopes you will write inreceipt of this & he will try and be more punctual in the future thatin the past.
