Miner Killed In Rock Fall Near Devonia
A 40-year-old miner was killed Friday morning in a rock fall at aPocahontas Fuel Co. mine near Devonia. CLARENCE CROSS of OliverSprings Rt.1, Morgan County,died only about five minutes after heentered the mine about 8 a.m. The accident occurreed only a shortdistance from where Mr. Cross's brother died in a similar mishap twoyears ago. FLETCHER CROSS was killed in another Devonia mine nearPocahontas mine. Co-workers uncovered the body within a short timeafter the accident occurred. Mr. Cross an employee of the PocahontasFuel Co. was a member of the Masonic lodge and was a veteran of WarWorld II. He is survived by his wif, Mrs. Kathleen Cross, twodaughters, Deborah Katherine and Kathy Loraine Cross, three sons,Clarence Edwardrd, Kenneth Ray and John William Cross, his mother, Mrs.Bessie Cross of Oliver Springs, four sisters, Mrs. Ruth Schofield ofLafollette, Mrs. Geneva Cook of Rockwood, Mrs. Estella Strumm and Mrs.Vinedan Rebuck of Ohio, four brothers, McKinley, Guy and WillardCross, all of Solon,O.,and J.W. Cross of Oliver Springs Rt.1.Funeralservices were held Sunday afternoon at the Middle Creek Baptist Churchwith the Rev.J.W. Bargiol and the Rev.Edwin Phillipsofficiating.Burial was in the Estes Cemetery with Black Diamond LodgeNo. 625 in charge at the grave. [Clinton Courier Oct 14,1965 ]
