I am looking for information on my grandfather, Masten Tate Hill who lived and worked on a farm in Sunbright,Morgan Co.,Tenn. around 1930.
Masten was born in Anderson Co.,Tenn.in 1855. I don't know why he went to Sunbright, because he had no relatives there. I am trying to find out if he married and had children in Morgan County,Tenn. He had 17 children by 3 different women. If any one has any information they can share I would appreciate it.

Jesse Kesterson and daughter Judy talked with Barbara Kesterson about2003. Barbara said that Masten married again after Harriet Dunn Hill divorced him. His wife was a Hill (Florence B.). Masten Tate Hill, 85 retired farmer of Anderson County, died at the home of his son, Oba Hill, Clinton RFD 4 last Saturday night. Mr. Hill had been a member of the Methodist Church for many years. Two daughters, Mrs.Henry Holt of Rogersville Junction and Mrs.John Hickson of Clinton; and six sons, Oba of Clinton, Henry of Midway, Orville of Rogersville Junction, Lee of Richmond,VA., Oliver and Wesley of Cincinnati, Ohio; all survive as do two sisters, Mrs.Sarah Herrell and Mrs.Frank Elllliot of Washington,D.C.; and two brothers, J.G.(Gid)Hill and W.P.Hill, both of near Clinton. Funeral services were Monday at Zion Baptist Church with the Rev. Mr. Rhyne and the Rev. Mr. Spurgeon and the Rev. K.M. Spickard officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery with Wells in charge.

NOTE: Obituary does not mention his children by Eliza Dunn nor his children by another wife, XXX Hill.

Whereas Moses Speer did in the 30th day of October 1819 convey to William Ewing , Michael C. Dunn , Thomas Edmiston and Moses Speer as Trustees, for the use of a Seminary of learning One Acre of land adjoining the Eastern boundary of the tract of land on which Jesse Maxwell now lives, on which acre of land conveyed as aforesaid there is now erected a Brick Schoolhouse, and whereas it is necessary that the Teachers, Students and others attending said Schoolhouse should have the free, common and uninterrupted use of a Spring of Water that is on the land of the said Jesse Maxwell & contiguous to said Schoolhouse ?

A home built by James C. Dunn still stands at the S0uthwest corner of West 5th Avenue and Jacksboro Street. James M. Dunn was born in this home as well as another architect by the name of Albert Baumann. The home prior to this which was occupiied by the James C. Dunn family has now the Lawson McGhee Library standing upon its foundations. James C. Dunn also built a warehouse in Decatur, Alabama. The timbers used were cut around Knoxville, sawed and pressed here, then shipped by flat boats to Decatur.

In the records of his grandfather, Dr. Fouche (?), Mr. W.B. Brownlow,realtor, recently found memorandum of a gift of $50.00 to James C.Dunn for "faithful service" in connection with the building of the Fouche home, which was erected upon the sitte of Marvis (?) Mortuary.James C. Dunn also built the old 2-story brick building at the northwest corner of Gay and Union (Miller's Store) which was occupied many years by a book store and print shop owned by WS.J. Ramage. When the demolition of the structure began, Mr. James M. Dunn purchased the brackets around the cornice work and used them to decorate his own home at 1424 Armstrong Ave.

Not sure at this time where this cemetery fits in with OUR DUNN line:

This small cemetery, indicated on the U.S.G.S. Bearden quadrangle, islocated in a yard off Nubbin Ridge Road. There probably were under adozen graves here. Only one very eroded stone remains, and it isalmost unreadable. There may have been a low stone wall around thiscemetery at one time. The cemetery was visited March 24, 1989.

By the way, Knox Co. TN Chancery Ct Docket #2076 shows the two oldestchildren were William C. Dunn and Thomas A. Dunn. I think William wasborn in the 1847 period, while around 1849 should turn out to be closefor Thomas. --Carl

This is the story about my grandfather;
Masten Tate Hill {My Grandfather} md. 1st to Harriet Ann Dunn and they had seven children, then later on Harriet had a sister Eliza Jane Dunn who lived with her mother Mildred Dunn. Mildred was struck by lightning and killed and Eliza didn't havave no one to take car of hereafter their mother died, so Masten and Harriet let Eliza moved in with them,Eliza was about 14 years old.After she moved in Eliza and my grandfather Masten, he and Eliza had five children together, but they never did get married and then later Harriet divorced Masten. Then my grandfather went to Jefferson Co., Tn and married my grandmother who was also a Hill they had five children, which my father was born.
Later on Eliza married one of my husband;s ancestors, Thomas A. Kesterson. He was in the Spanish American War.
I sent to get Thomas' records and learned from them that Eliza had been married prior to all the other happenings. Eliza was married to william Pruett in Knox Co.,Tn.They lived together for two months and her husband had her charged with adultery with my grandfather, Masten. Eliza and William got a divorced. William and Eliza had no children.

William Dunn was in the Revolutionary War.
William came to the United States from Bristol, England in a vessel named "Woods" in the capacity of a cabin boy. William settled in Virginia. For sometime he operated a stage coach between Washington and Richmond.
He enlisted in Captain Firfax's{?} Virginia Company for the duration of the Rev. War. Captured by the British, he was given the option of serving with the British Troops
in this country, or taken on one of the British Prison Ships at Charleston, S.C.
He served with the British Troops until the opportunity cane to escape and rejoin his old command. He was present at the surrender of Cornwallis at Yorkstown, following which he was in charge of a large number of British Prisoners who were sent over Congress{?}.
Later William Dunn became a builder. James C.Dunn was also a builder. james built a beautiful home in Knoxville, Tn. that is still standing today. the Dunn family learned the carpenters trade. I have James C.Dunn married on 26 Dec. 1844 in Knoox C., Tn. to Mildred A. Malone. I have a folder that has Dunn information. I did the Dunn research,because my grandfather was married to Harriet and had 7 children and Eliza whom my grandfather didn't marry, but had 5 children. I wanted to know my kinship to these families, which I learned in my research and found all these the cousins whom I have met and talk with and I was so glad to find them after searching all these years.
This is why I have done the Dunn Family research. I want to know all my kin folks.
Is there anything you can share on the dunn families? Any information will be appreciated.

Wonderful story!! I am descended from two different groups of Dunns who intermarried.

William Dunn (the Rev. soldier) had a daughter Mary who married Thomas Rowland. Their daughter Eliza Jane Rowland married my 2nd great-grandfather Elijah Dunn, himself a descendant of a completely different (and much earlier) William Dunn of the Northern Neck of VA.--Carl

Well, at least part of the story has problems. Mildred A. (Malone)Dunn died in 1866, so Eliza Ann Dunn could not have been her daughter. However, Harriet A. Dunn's father James C. Dunn appears to have remarried a sister of Mildred Malone's in 1867, so that may fit into the picture. Any idea why Eliza Ann Dunn would have been living with her mother, as opposed to with her mother and father? James C. Dunn died in 1889. --Carl

James C. Dunn married Sarah Malone,the sister of Mildred Malone after she died.I found the marriage records in Knoxville.They were married April 13,1867 ,and Eliza was born in 1870. So John Dunn and Eliza are the children of Sarah Malone and James C. Dunn

Thomas Dunn was a builder like his father, William Dunn. He was alsoknown to be a designer and carpenter since there were no archigects inthis time period. From Virginia, he came to Tennessee and located inth fork of the Holston and French Broad rivers. Later he moved to thetown of Knoxville. There he built the Hagen peper mill, west ofKnoxville actually, in the Middlebrook Pike.

THANK YOU for the information on James C. DUNN (and family) of Knox Co., TN! I just stumbled across it and I'm so glad that I did! Since your info has assisted me so much, I have some information for YOU now! :) 5 Generations of DUNN men who were builders/contractors in the Knoxville, TN, and surrounding areas. Email me for additional family info if needed! Get ready..here we go..

Gen 1 -
William Dunn came to the United States from Bristol, England in a vessel named the "Woods" in the capacity of a cabin boy. He was about 14 yrs. old; (approx. 1765).

William Dunn settled in Virginia. For some time he operated a stage coach between Washington and Richmond. He enlisted in Captain Fairfax's(?) Virginia Company for the duration of the Revolutionary War. Captured by the British, he was given the option of serving with the British troops in this country or taking a chance on one of the British prison ships at Charleston, SC. He served with the British troops until the opportunity came to escape and rejoin his old command. He was present at the surrender of Cornwallis at Yorktown, following which he was in charge of a large number of British prisoners who were sent over to Conyers (?). Later, William Dunn became a builder. (?'s mean some info unreadable)

Gen 2 - son of William DUNN (and migration to TN)

Thomas Dunn was a builder like his father, William Dunn. He was also known to be designer and carpenter since there were no architects in this time period.
From Virginia, he came to Tennessee and located in the fork of the Holston and French Broad (?) rivers. Later, he moved to the town of Knoxville. There he built the Hagen paper mill, west of Knoxville actually, in the Middlebrook Pike.

Gen 3 - son of Thomas DUNN

A home built by James C. Dunn still stands at the South west corner of West 5th Avenue and Jacksboro Street. James M. Dunn was born in this home as well as another architect by the name of Albert Baumann. The home prior to this which was occupied by the James C. Dunn family has now the Lawson McGhee Library standing upon its foundations. James C. Dunn also built a warehouse in Decatur, Alabama. The timbers used were cut around Knoxville, sawed and pressed here, then shipped by flat boats to Decatur.

In the records of his grandfather Dr. Fouche (?), Mr. W. B. Brownlow, realtor, recently found memorandum of a gift of $50.00 to James C. Dunn for "faithful service" in connection with the building of the Fouche home which was erected upon the site of Marvis (?) Mortuary. James C. Dunn also built the old 2-story brick building at the northwest corner of Gay and Union (Miller's store) which was occupied many years by a book store and printing shop owned by W.J. Ramage. When the demolition of the structure began, Mr. James M. Dunn purchased the brackets around the cornice (?) work and used them to decorate his own home at 1424 Armstrong Ave.

Gen 4 - son of James C. DUNN

James M. Dunn, son of James C. Dunn was a builder like the fathers before him. He built 5 homes in Knoxville, TN.
He learned the carpenters trade at age 14.
Upon the taking of this information (1927), James had been engaged in the contracting business for 51 years, having built some of the finest residences, business houses, and public buildings and factories in Tennessee as well as adjoining states. In 1920-21, he took his son
(Gen 5)Oscar Dunn as a business partner which creates quite a long line of family builders.
James' proudest possessions are carpenters tools which belonged to his grandfather. These include a plane and saw which are 150 years old or older.

Richard married Lucy Lett on 27 Feb 1811 in Knox, Tennessee, United States. Lucy (daughter of James Lett and Lucy Hubbard) was born in 1793; died in 1865 in Union, Tennessee, United States. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Married:
Richard and Lucy Lett Malone are only possibilities as parents of Mildred and Sarah Malone and NOT proven.

1850 Census shows Sarah as 16 when she would have been only 6 per family records that show birth year as 1844.

There is also a 3-year-old son in the household. Lucy would have been 54 years old when she had this child if the child was indeed their son.

1850 census shows Richard as 81 years old, Lucy 57, Sarah 16, and son aged 3. No other children shown. But since they were married in 1811, it is quite likely they had children grown and no longer living with them.

A family record found on Ancestry shows Richard Malone's tombstone in Union County and his birth date as 1791. It shows Lucy's birthdate as 1793. That would make her age accurate with the 1850 census but not Richard's.

The same family record has Sarah married to someone else, not James C. Dunn. Is it possible she was married twice or is this a different Sarah Malone.
