I guess you would call Masten homeless. He stayed wherever he could. My dad did not speak very well of him. He didn't want anything to dowith him, but my dad loved his precious mother, Florence BeatriceHill, who died and left her 5 young childreren with Masten and sad tosay Masten didn't want them, so he took them to an orphanage. Mastenwasn't home with my dad and his siblings when their mother passed awayat the early age of 34 with T.B. My dad said their was an aunt takingcare of them. My dad would get up in church and talk about hismother and cry like a baby. He loved her so much. Dad was 10 years oldwhen she died.

    Katy Sands:

Katy Sands was a friend of Eliza's and was a school teacher. They lived in Roane County. Some unscrupulous men who lived in the area near the Sands home had stolen from several neighbors and had been caught. The owners of the stolen items were asked to appear in court and testify against the thieves. Katy was one of those testifying in court after recognizing her iron skillet as one of the items stolen by the men. She told officers or family that these same men had once run their dirty hands through her freshly churned butter and contaminated her milk.

The thieves were angry with Katy for testifying against them and apparently extracted revenge.

One night Katy and her husband were preparing for a school Christmas party or program. Her husband went ahead to start a fire to warm up the building, leaving Katy to finish preparations at home.

Katy never arrived at the school. When friends and family went back to find her, they found her dead. She had been beaten in the head with a stick of firewood and stabbed in the throat with a butcher knife.

Eliza Dunn Kesterson lay on her deathbed at the time of her good friend's death--which was the winter of 1929. Eliza's house was filled with family and friends, including Johnny and Stella Joyner, who had just recently arrived. Johnny Joyner was a close friend to Eliza's son Sam. They were said to have grown up together as close as brothers. Johnny was the son of Katy Sands and had come home to attend Katy's funeral, then went to be with his friend Sam as they sat with Eliza.

No one wanted to tell Eliza about her dear friend's death, so Johnny and Stella told her they were home for the Christmas holidays. But a woman identified as a Mrs. Brummett, came in and talked about the murder where Eliza could hear her and the family had to finally tell Eliza about the loss of her friend.

The murderers were later apprehended and housed in the Roane County jail. Johnny and Sam went to the jail. Johnny was carrying a pistol and intended to kill the men responsible for his mother's death. He managed to smuggle the pistol into the jail. Sam pleaded with Johnny to abandon his mission of killing the prisoners and Johnny finally listened. They left the jail..

Eventually the murderers were convicted and executed, according to family stories. Their names are unknown.

Per Mary Kesterson, Eliza's daughter-in-law, Eliza's mother was struck by lightning as she sat in a rocking chair beside a window watching for her husband to come home one night. The lightning didn't come through the window, instead came through the chimney and struck her mother.
NOTE: 2014--other stories on Ancestry.com say it was Mildred, not Sarah (Eliza's mother) who was killed by lightning. J SPRADLIN.

    ***************************************************************************
Eliza met Thomas A Kesterson after he got out of the Spanish American War in 1899. Eliza wanted to marry Thomas and Masten did not want her to marry him and told her if she did, she could not take her children with her. (Sam was living with Eliza's brother at that time; he was 7years old.) Eliza relayed Masten's message to Thomas. Thomas got his gun (one story says he strapped on his six-gun) and went with Eliza to get her children. Masten was sitting in the front yard with a shottgun when they arrived. Thomas told him that they were going to get married and she wanted her children. They had come to get them whether he liked it or not. Thomas told Masten he had better not put his hands on his shotgun because if he did, Thomas would shoot him. So Masten just sat there and they loaded up the children and left.

Another version of this story says they went after the baby, Ethel, not all the children since Sam was not there.

    Horror in Jonesville
There is usually a beginning and end to most stories but occasionally a story is not so clear and one must pick a point for both. This story will begin in the early nineteenth century when many families were leaving Virginia and heading west in search for land and a new life. Thomas Howerton Jett was one of these pioneers who along with his family would find their way to Knox County. Thomas was the oldest child of Stark Jett and Frances Howerton. Thomas parents would later cross the Clinch River into Anderson County and Thomas would marry Rebecca Bell Tillery and continue carving out a new life in Roane County around Wheat, Tn. Thomas was an industrial young man and his hard work would take the family to Morgan County to start a long career as a lumber business and the owner of a saw mill and raise a family of twelve children.
The youngest of his children was Erastus (Rassey) H. Jett who worked with his father until he married Rebecca A Love from Roane County in 1893. It

A home built by James C. Dunn still stands at the S0uthwest corner of West 5th Avenue and Jacksboro Street. James M. Dunn was born in this home as well as another architect by the name of Albert Baumann. The home prior to this which was occupiied by the James C. Dunn family has now the Lawson McGhee Library standing upon its foundations. James C. Dunn also built a warehouse in Decatur, Alabama. The timbers used were cut around Knoxville, sawed and pressed here, then shipped by flat boats to Decatur.

In the records of his grandfather, Dr. Fouche (?), Mr. W.B. Brownlow, realtor, recently found memorandum of a gift of $50.00 to James C.Dunn for "faithful service" in connection with the building of the Fouche home, which was erected upon the sitte of Marvis (?) Mortuary.James C. Dunn also built the old 2-story brick building at the northwest corner of Gay and Union (Miller's Store) which was occupied many years by a book store and print shop owned by WS.J. Ramage. When the demolition of the structure began, Mr. James M. Dunn purchased the brackets around the cornice work and used them to decorate his own home at 1424 Armstrong Ave.

Not sure at this time where this cemetery fits in with OUR DUNN line:

This small cemetery, indicated on the U.S.G.S. Bearden quadrangle, islocated in a yard off Nubbin Ridge Road. There probably were under adozen graves here. Only one very eroded stone remains, and it isalmost unreadable. There may have been a low stone wall around thiscemetery at one time. The cemetery was visited March 24, 1989.

James C. Dunn md. Mildred A. Malone
Harriet Ann Dunn md. Masten Tate Hill

    This is the story about my grandfather;
Masten Tate Hill {My Grandfather} md. 1st to Harriet Ann Dunn and they had seven children, then later on Harriet had a sister Eliza Jane Dunn who lived with her mother Mildred Dunn. Mildred was struck by lightning and killed and Eliza didn't havave no one to take car of hereafter their mother died, so Masten and Harriet let Eliza moved in with them,Eliza was about 14 years old. After she moved in Eliza and my grandfather Masten, he and Eliza had five children together, but they never did get married and then later Harriet divorced Masten. Then my grandfather went to Jefferson Co., Tn and married my grandmother who was also a Hill they had five children, which my father was born.
Later on Eliza married one of my husband;s ancestors, Thomas A. Kesterson. He was in the Spanish American War.
I sent to get Thomas' records and learned from them that Eliza had been married prior to all the other happenings. Eliza was married to william Pruett in Knox Co.,Tn.They lived together for two months and her husband had her charged with adultery with my grandfather, Masten. Eliza and William got a divorced. William and Eliza had no children.

William Dunn was in the Revolutionary War.
William came to the United States from Bristol, England in a vessel named "Woods" in the capacity of a cabin boy. William settled in Virginia. For sometime he operated a stage coach between Washington and Richmond.
He enlisted in Captain Firfax's{?} Virginia Company for the duration of the Rev. War. Captured by the British, he was given the option of serving with the British Troops
in this country, or taken on one of the British Prison Ships at Charleston, S.C.
He served with the British Troops until the opportunity cane to escape and rejoin his old command. He was present at the surrender of Cornwallis at Yorkstown, following which he was in charge of a large number of British Prisoners who were sent over Congress{?}.
Later William Dunn became a builder. James C.Dunn was also a builder. james built a beautiful home in Knoxville, Tn. that is still standing today. the Dunn family learned the carpenters trade. I have James C.Dunn married on 26 Dec. 1844 in Knoox C., Tn. to Mildred A. Malone. I have a folder that has Dunn information. I did the Dunn research, because my grandfather was married to Harriet and had 7 children and Eliza whom my grandfather didn't marry, but had 5 children. I wanted to know my kinship to these families, which I learned in my research and found all these the cousins whom I have met and talk with and I was so glad to find them after searching all these years.
This is why I have done the Dunn Family research. I want to know all my kin folks.
Is there anything you can share on the dunn families? Any information will be appreciated.

Wonderful story!! I am descended from two different groups of Dunns who intermarried.

William Dunn (the Rev. soldier) had a daughter Mary who married Thomas Rowland. Their daughter Eliza Jane Rowland married my 2nd great-grandfather Elijah Dunn, himself a descendant of a completely different (and much earlier) William Dunn of the Northern Neck of VA.--Carl

Well, at least part of the story has problems. Mildred A. (Malone)Dunn died in 1866, so Eliza Ann Dunn could not have been her daughter. However, Harriet A. Dunn's father James C. Dunn appears to have remarried a sister of Mildred Malone's in 1867, so that may fit into the picture. Any idea why Eliza Ann Dunn would have been living with her mother, as opposed to with her mother and father? James C. Dunn died in 1889. --Carl

James C. Dunn married Sarah Malone, the sister of Mildred Malone after she died.I found the marriage records in Knoxville. They were married April 13,1867 ,and Eliza was born in 1870. So John Dunn and Eliza are the children of Sarah Malone and James C. Dunn

THANK YOU for the information on James C. DUNN (and family) of Knox Co., TN! I just stumbled across it and I'm so glad that I did! Since your info has assisted me so much, I have some information for YOU now! :) 5 Generations of DUNN men who were builders/contractors in the Knoxville, TN, and surrounding areas. Email me for additional family info if needed! Get ready..here we go..

    Gen 1 -
William Dunn came to the United States from Bristol, England in a vessel named the "Woods" in the capacity of a cabin boy. He was about 14 yrs. old; (approx. 1765).

William Dunn settled in Virginia. For some time he operated a stage coach between Washington and Richmond. He enlisted in Captain Fairfax's(?) Virginia Company for the duration of the Revolutionary War. Captured by the British, he was given the option of serving with the British troops in this country or taking a chance on one of the British prison ships at Charleston, SC. He served with the British troops until the opportunity came to escape and rejoin his old command. He was present at the surrender of Cornwallis at Yorktown, following which he was in charge of a large number of British prisoners who were sent over to Conyers (?). Later, William Dunn became a builder. (?'s mean some info unreadable)

Gen 2 - son of William DUNN (and migration to TN)

Thomas Dunn was a builder like his father, William Dunn. He was also known to be designer and carpenter since there were no architects in this time period.
From Virginia, he came to Tennessee and located in the fork of the Holston and French Broad (?) rivers. Later, he moved to the town of Knoxville. There he built the Hagen paper mill, west of Knoxville actually, in the Middlebrook Pike.

Gen 3 - son of Thomas DUNN

A home built by James C. Dunn still stands at the South west corner of West 5th Avenue and Jacksboro Street. James M. Dunn was born in this home as well as another architect by the name of Albert Baumann. The home prior to this which was occupied by the James C. Dunn family has now the Lawson McGhee Library standing upon its foundations. James C. Dunn also built a warehouse in Decatur, Alabama. The timbers used were cut around Knoxville, sawed and pressed here, then shipped by flat boats to Decatur.

In the records of his grandfather Dr. Fouche (?), Mr. W. B. Brownlow, realtor, recently found memorandum of a gift of $50.00 to James C. Dunn for "faithful service" in connection with the building of the Fouche home which was erected upon the site of Marvis (?) Mortuary. James C. Dunn also built the old 2-story brick building at the northwest corner of Gay and Union (Miller's store) which was occupied many years by a book store and printing shop owned by W.J. Ramage. When the demolition of the structure began, Mr. James M. Dunn purchased the brackets around the cornice (?) work and used them to decorate his own home at 1424 Armstrong Ave.

Gen 4 - son of James C. DUNN

James M. Dunn, son of James C. Dunn was a builder like the fathers before him. He built 5 homes in Knoxville, TN.
He learned the carpenters trade at age 14.
Upon the taking of this information (1927), James had been engaged in the contracting business for 51 years, having built some of the finest residences, business houses, and public buildings and factories in Tennessee as well as adjoining states. In 1920-21, he took his son
(Gen 5)Oscar Dunn as a business partner which creates quite a long line of family builders.
James' proudest possessions are carpenters tools which belonged to his grandfather. These include a plane and saw which are 150 years old or older.

    See attached media.

    Died:
    Jefferson or Sevier Co. TN

Thomas married Ellen Chambers in 1810 in Knox, Tennessee, United States. Ellen (daughter of James Chambers and Elizabeth Jackson) was born in 1788 in Abbeville, Abbeville, South Carolina, United States; died on 4 Jun 1848; was buried in Ball Camp, Knox, Tennessee, United States. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 5.  Ellen Chambers was born in 1788 in Abbeville, Abbeville, South Carolina, United States (daughter of James Chambers and Elizabeth Jackson); died on 4 Jun 1848; was buried in Ball Camp, Knox, Tennessee, United States.

    1. 2. James Chambers Dunn was born on 17 Feb 1813 in Knox, Tennessee, United States; died on 22 Jun 1889 in Tennessee, United States; was buried in Old Gray Cemetery, Knoxville, Knox, Tennessee, United States.
    2. Mary Ellen Dunn was born on 30 Nov 1815 in Sevier, Tennessee, United States; died on 15 Mar 1887 in Knox, Tennessee, United States.
    3. William H Dunn was born in 1817 in Greene, Tennessee, United States; died in 1849 in Madison, Alabama, United States.

  3. 6.  Richard Malone was born in 1761 in Maryland, United States; died in 1858 in Union, Tennessee, United States.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • _UID: 24DEC83AAA6749599897C6DAF0A5F49AA97C

Richard married Lucy Lett on 27 Feb 1811 in Knox, Tennessee, United States. Lucy (daughter of James Lett and Lucy Hubbard) was born in 1793; died in 1865 in Union, Tennessee, United States. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  4. 7.  Lucy Lett was born in 1793 (daughter of James Lett and Lucy Hubbard); died in 1865 in Union, Tennessee, United States.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • _UID: 8FCD3BD24B1D4C9E95AEDE3D7CD6F269C6AE

    Notes:

    Married:
Richard and Lucy Lett Malone are only possibilities as parents of Mildred and Sarah Malone and NOT proven.

1850 Census shows Sarah as 16 when she would have been only 6 per family records that show birth year as 1844.

There is also a 3-year-old son in the household. Lucy would have been 54 years old when she had this child if the child was indeed their son.

1850 census shows Richard as 81 years old, Lucy 57, Sarah 16, and son aged 3. No other children shown. But since they were married in 1811, it is quite likely they had children grown and no longer living with them.

A family record found on Ancestry shows Richard Malone's tombstone in Union County and his birth date as 1791. It shows Lucy's birthdate as 1793. That would make her age accurate with the 1850 census but not Richard's.

The same family record has Sarah married to someone else, not James C. Dunn. Is it possible she was married twice or is this a different Sarah Malone.

    3. James L Malone was born in 1850 in Campbell, Tennessee, United States; and died.

Generation: 4

  1. 8.  William Dunn was born on 7 May 1751 in Bristol, Gloucestershire, England, United Kingdom; died on 19 Dec 1837 in Knox, Tennessee, United States; was buried in Knox, Tennessee, United States.

    • _UID: D121006B3F3A4FA8AF1DA4B8EDEA96BF21EE

    Notes:

There were apparently two Willilam Dunns in the early U.S. and which Dunn James Chambers Dunn descended from is somewhat difficult to prove.

    Info from Sandy Anderson:

William Dunn came to the United States from Bristol, England, in a vessel named the "Woods" in the capacity of a cabin boy. He was about14 years old. (Approximately 1765)

William Dunn settled in Virginia. For some time he operated a statecoach between Washington and Richmond. From another source (unknown):
William Dunn was born May 7, 1751, in Bristol, Gloucester, England, and Died December 19, 1837, in Knoxville, TN. He married Catherine Walters 1782 in Green brier Co, VA, daughter of Johnathan Walters. She was born 1758 in Greenbriar Co., VA, and died July 29, 1847 in Knoxville, TN.

From another note which may be a different line altogether:
William Dunn, who was born in Bristol England, stolen in 1758, escaped from ship 1765, at Philadelphia Pennsylvania, hired out in New Jersey, went to Virginia, there enlisted in 1776, "for during the war", was a private under Capt. Thomas Heard, Col. George Baylor, in a regiment of Virginia troups. Was in Battles of Monmouth, Stoney Point, Camden, there captured and placed on board a ship at Charleston SC., starved,to save his life enlisted with the British and escaped first opportunity. "Did" and joined American (?) forces at Ninety-Six rejoined my Company under Capt. Thomas Heard, at battle of Cowpens, with prisoners as guard through North Carolina, at battle of Yorktown when Cornwallis surrendered, guarded prisoners in Winchester VA, there discharged, by Capt George Stubblefield, married my wife, Katherine in fall of 1782. See widow file #286 at pension dept Washington DC. His application for pension filed Feb 9, 1829, hers(widow) March 30, 1843. She died July 29, 1847, age 89 years; last check sent was endorsed by her children Isabella Edington and Thomas Dunn, Certificate # 4283; statement sent WE Parham from Dept of Interior signed by J.L. Davenport, Acting Commissioner, April 30,1907.

    also:

I, W.E. Parham, am a member of the Sons of the American Revolution, because of this service, my number 197 Tennessee, National # 27,922 in April 1918....

All descendants of E.N. Parham and wife Mary Ellen Dunn are eligible. William Dunn and wife are buried in the Presbyterian Cemetery on Church and State [streets], no marker--were moved when second building was put up and placed in East side along wall, showed me by Lewis Rucker, who was shown where to get and replace by E.N. Parham, my Grandfather, whom I knew from early after 1860 to his deafth in 1894, Yours Respt, W. E.Parham.

    TWO WILLILAM DUNNs

From Bob Goff who was researching William Dunn of Greene County TN
Bristol William. To further complicate the early East Tennessee Dunn picture, a William Dunn, clearly a different William, was born 7 May 1751 in Bristol England, and came to America in 1775 as a 14-year-old cabin boy on the ship "The Woods". He entered the colonies at Philadelphia in 1766 and subsequently moved to Virginia. He served in the War in the 8th Virginia Regiment. Another account (Whitley, 1961)says he served in Capt Thomas Hoard's Company (Caroline County VA),Col. GeGeorge Baylor's Regiment (8th VA??). Caroline County is just west of Westmoreland Co and between Fredericksberg and Richmond. He married Katherine (born 1758, died 1847) in 1782. Some time after the war he moved to Greenbrier VA (Greenbrier Coo, now WV). He later moved into east Tenn; one account says to Greene Co., but he clearly is not the William of Green Co associated with Daniel. It is likely this was the William who settled at Seven Islands in 1793 (NC Land Grant dated 12 Jan 1793; Green Co Deed Book 1, page 6, 100 acres for 10 pounds, including the Seven Islands). He then moved to Knoxville, about 1796,where he lived 41 years. He died in Knoxville on 19 (or 18) December 1837. This this is clearly not the Green County William, presumably Daniel's brother. This William had at least four sons: Thomas (born9 Feb 1785); Johnathan (born 29 Dec. 1788); William (born Oct 20,1791) - (any relation to William Dunn #905) in the "Connections") and John (born 28 Feb 1804). This William also had 7 daughters (Whitley, 1961, page 597). This is probably the "old Mr. Dunn", the wagoner from Knoxville, who helped 12 year old Davey Crockett get back to Tennessee (see Crockett, page 23).:"

"It should be noted that a Daniel, William and James moved together as a group to the Watauga settlement. Based on their interlocking relationships, Daniel, William, and James would appear to be brothers. A Joseph (later identified as Joseph Donn) and William (a second William--probably Bristol William) also moved into the Nolichuckey settlement, i.e., into what was to become Greene Co., at about the same time. Joseph could conceivably have been a brother as well but he disappears from the scene early on. And perhaps even a William O'Dunn migrated into the same general area at about the same time; But William O'Dunn was probably Bristol William.

Sheri, I'm sorry I can't be of much help to you. I do descend from one of the many William Dunns in Eastern Tennessee. It took me 3 years to determine just which one it was. He turned out to be the one referred to as Bristol William because he was born in Bristol, England in 1751(Pension Papers).
I have not followed all his children's families forward to present time so we might be related or not.
I am from William's son Thomas Dunn & Ellen Chambers to William H.Dunn & Ann Eliza Boyd to Robert Thomas Dunn & Martha Jane Clark to Fannie Belle Dunn & William Hamilton Holder to Richard Ray Holder & Della Bruner to ME.
Thus William Dunn was my 4th G Grandfather. There is not an Isabelle in my line, however one of Bristol William's daughter was named Isabel, so one of the brothers might have a daughter or granddaughter named Isabelle.
Good luck to you, Shirley Holder Antrim

    DUNN, William (Catharine). W.286
    (P. 19)
7 July 1831. Knox Co., Tenn. William Dunn (x) declares Col. George Gaylor was his colonel at the end of the war and George V.Stubblefield was his major and Capt. Thomas Hoard his captain. He was discharged at Winchester, VA., after the taking of Little York and was sent there with prisoners.
8 Sept. 1830. Knox Co., Tenn. James Acree declares he and William Dunn enlisted the same day in Capt. Thomas Hoard's Company. He and Dunn lived a mile from each other at the time. Both were discharged at the same time in Winchester, VA., by Maj. George Willie Stubblefield. When Capt. Hoard joined the army, the company was transferred to different regiments, the affiant to the 5th and then the 8th, and Dunn to the 10th.
2 June 1831. Knox Co., Tenn. James Acree declares he was acquainted with William Dunn before he enlisted in the Continental army. Dunn first enlisted for five years and before his term expired he enlisted for the war. They were both at the siege of York and both marched with prisoners as a guard to Winchester and after peace was made were both discharged there.
29 Dec 1831. Knox Co., Tenn. William (X) Dunn declares he served as a private in the company of Capt. Thomas Hoard in the 8th Virginia Regiment of Col. George Baylor and was discharged at Winchester, VA.,by Maj. Oiler Stubblefield.
19 Jan. 1833. Knox Co., Tenn. William m Dunn (x) of said county, age 81, declares he was born in Bristol, England, on 7 May 1751 and came to the United States in a vessel called the Woods in the capacity of a cabin boy when he was almost 14 years old. He landed at Philadelphia and being displeased with his captain he ran away and engaged himself to live with George Haywood who then lived in New Jersey. About two years later after he went to live with Haywood, Haywood moved to Carolina Co., VA., and he continued to live with him until he enlisted in Carolina County in a company of Capt. Thomas Howard attached to a battalion of Maj. George Willie Stubblefield and regiment of Col. George Baylor, the 8th Virginia Regiment. HHis enlistment was for three years of the war and he was at the battle of Monmouth in 1778 and afterwards at the storming of Stony Point under Gen. Wayne. He is under the impression he went as a volunteer in this battle. He was at Camden, S.C.C., at the time of Gates' defeat and was there taken a prisoner and carried to Charleston where he was put on board a prison ship and detained two or three weeks, where his only alternative appeared to be in enlistment to the British service with a prospect of deserting them and again joining the American army, or starvation as a prisoner. He chose the former and enlisted into(p.20) British service and marched from Charleston with a battalion under Maj. Andrew Mansfield to take possession of Fort Hampton. A few days after they had taken possession of Fort Hampton, he deserted and joined the American (?) troops when lying at or near Ninety Six. The first engagement he was in after this was at Cowpens. Before this he had again joined his own command under Capt. Howard. After the battle he marched up through North Carolina with prisoners. He was at the seige of York until Cornwallis surrendered, when he marched with some prisoners to Winchester, VA., where after remaining some time he was discharged by Maj. George Willie Stubblefield. He served more than three years.

He has no record of his age, but from information of his parents before he left England, he believes he was born in 1751. Shortly after his discharge he moved to Greenbrier Co., VA., where he lived several years, and then moved to Greene Co., Tennessee, where he lived a few years, then he moved to Knox County where he has lived upwards of forty years. His discharge was destroyed in the burning of his house several years ago.

The Daniel Dunn family of Tennessee was in Blount County and may ormay not be related to William Dunn

    BEGIN QUOTE
"There were also a William and a James who owned land in the same area, and they were probably brothers or brothers-in-law to Daniel. In1788, both William and Daniel Dunn sold at least part of their land on the Watuaga to one Joseph Garland. In 1796, they sold more land along that river, and four years prior to that, in 1792, James Dunn sold land in the same vicinity probably along the Watauga also.

Even though William Dunn still owned land on the Watuaga in 1796.records show that he bought land on the north side of the Nolachucky River at the Seven Islands in 1792. In 1797, five years after William had purchased his land, Daniel Dunn bought land on the South side of the Nolachuckey. Two years later, he also owns land on both sides of"Cove Creek", probably in "Wears Cove". END QUOTE
