  George Cooper was an English sailor an dson of of a petty officer ofthe English Navy. He came to America in the latter part of the 18thCentury, having landed off the coast of Maryland. He met a youngEnglish girl who came over on the same ship. Later they were marriedand they settled at Elliot Mills, which is now Elliot City, MD.George Cooper wasn't educated, but he became a shoemaker and basketweaver.
