JOHN THOMAS FARMER SR.
John Thomas Farmer Sr., 81, was received into the arms of the Savior Sunday, Jan. 30, 2011, surrounded by his family at home in Clinton.
He was born May 5, 1929.
For many years he was a member of First Baptist Church of Clinton and in recent years joined Liberty Baptist of Wartburg, where he attended with his family. He served his country in the United States Army National Guard. On Christmas Day 1953, he married Elsie Childers Farmer, with whom he shared 46 precious years. For 34 years he was employed by Union Carbide/Martin Marietta at the Oak Ridge Y-12 plant. He was an expert refrigeration technician and for many years taught classes for Knnoxville Vocational at Fulton High School. For 23 years he and his wife owned and operated Oliver Springs Flower and Gardens. His hobbies included farming, fishing, cooking and working in the American Legion. His favorite pass-times were watching University of Tennessee sports, especially the Lady Vols, and spoiling his family.
He was preceded in death by: Parents, Sarah Elizabeth Wright and Roy Fletcher Farmer; wife, Elsie Childers Farmer; brothers, Nelson Farmer and Roy Farmer; and sister, Louise Farmer Beets.
He is survived by: Son, John Farmer Jr. and wife Susan of Knoxville; daughter, Valerie Hopper and husband Steve of Lancing; grandchildren, Katie Knox and husband Zandy, Alanna Hargis and husband Rodney, and Thomas Farmer and wife Stephanie; precious great-grandchildren, Elsie and Steven Knox brought him great joy. He also leaves two dear brothers, Jimmy Farmer and wife Billie, Gene Farmer and wife Jo, a host of dear nephews and nieces, and many special friends.
His nephews, Dewayne, Dennis, David, Joe, Jimmy, Gene Jr., Randy, and Alan Farmer served as pallbearers. Lennis Thomas, Jerry Brantley, and Kenneth McDonald are honorary pallbearers.
Memorial donations for Mr. Farmer can be sent to the Clinton American Legion Post # 172 Building Fund, c/o Leon Jaquet, P.O. Box 363 Clinton, TN 37717.
The family received friends from 5 ? 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2011, at Sharp Funeral Home in Oliver Springs.
The funeral followed at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 3, 2011, with Dr. Paul Frick and the Rev. Gene Farmer officiating.
Family and friends met at noon Thursday, Feb. 3, 2011, at Sharp Funeral Home to proceed to Anderson Memorial Gardens for the burial at 1 p.m.
