  • Notes
    • From the book by Edna Wallace Seivers
"Peter, Jr., was the last born child of Peter, Sr. and Elisabeth WoodsWallace. He came to America from Ireland in 1724 when his widowedmother brought the family along with her four brothers and theirfamilies. The group settled in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.
In 1738 Peter, Jr., married his cousin, Martha Woods. Three of hissiblings also married children of Michael Woods: William Wallacemarried Hannah Woods; Andrew Wallace married Margaret Woods; andSusanna Wallace married William Woods. In 1739 PePeter Jr., and hiswife Martah and Peter Jr's mother, Elisabeth were in Virginia. Theysettled in the part of Augusta County which in 1769 was known asBotetourt County and then in 1788 became Rockbridge Co. Their home wasonly a few miles southwest of what is now known as Lexington. Thename Rockbridge was named for the famed natural bridge.
Adjoining neighbors of Peter, Jr. and Martha were two of her sistersand one brother: Magdalen Woods McDowell-Bordon-Boyer. Sarah WoodsLapsley, and Richard Woods.
This was part of the Great Valley of Virginia, west of the Blue Ridge.Peter Jr's father-in-law and brothers William and Andrew Wallace livedabout 55 miles northeast in an area from the eastern base of theBlueRidge eastword toward Charlottesville.
Deed records from 1750 to 1768 show that Peter Jr. bought over 500acres of land, all near or bordering the James River. He owned 150.5acres on Whistle Creek and later had 315 acres on a branch of BuffaloCree, all coming from the James River. When Peter Jr's descendantscame into East Tennessee, they named the creek on their Anderson Co.farm Buffalo Creek. In 1988 this name stillo shows on road signs, both in Virginia and Tennessee.
The Wallaces and their Woods cousins were Scotch Presbyterians. PeterJr. and Martha helped their relatives, the McDowells, Lapsleys, Woods, found the Timber Ridge Presbyterian Church. Peter Jr's father-in-lawand brothers William and Andrew Wallace had founded the MountainPalisn Presbyterian Church near their homes.
Virginia Court recoreds show that in 1750 a suit was filed for 1738debt in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Records of Possessions, or taxes, were assessed in 1760 and 1765. In 1768 Peter, Jr., was issued a hempcertificate. On one of the property deeds, Peter Jr. is listed asfarmer of Albermarle. In 1768 he was appointed to view a road. Heserved as appraiser for serveral estates and witnessed numerous deeds, wills, and other official papers."

Judy note: This last paragraph indicates his respectable status, hisleadership, and is an indication of wealth.
