      Thomas Goddard probably died sometime after April 1862 since his youngest daughter was born in 1863. Months are unknown.

      According to Louise Scarbrough, widow of Kenneth Scarbrough whose mother was a Goddard from Coalfield, Thomas was in the civil war and his unit was on the way to Chattanooga, TN and he stopped at Horse Tie in the Coalfield Area. Horse Tie wawas a huge rock that was about impossible to climb. According to Donna Smith Rice (in a conversation dated 06/08/2010) once you climb to the the top of the rock you can see all of Petros. Thomas tied his horse up to Horse Tie and walked home to see his family in what is now Solomon Hollow. Family legend has it that he was only spending the night with his wife. However, the same legend says he came down with pneumonia once he got home, where he worsened and died. Louise says that the Union Army didn't give him a pension because they treated him as a deserter. [Conversation at Coalfield Genealogical & Historical Society meeting 06/08/2010.}
